I know most people or carb crazy but will I ever be able to eat a sandwich again?

Recommended Posts

I've been coming here for a long time and I must have missed something. Who are the carb nazis?

I was being silly. But some folks in other threads I've read seem to be anti carb. I get where that works for them but everyone is different and I wanted to avoid any conflicting interests because bread seems to be a hot topic.

Oh! And to answer the question from 4.5 months out...

I can eat a piece of toasted wheat bread, crusts cut off, with two crispy bacon strips inside. Just figured that out yesterday. DELICIOUS. And fiber!

That sounds amazing. I am still on liquids week 3 so any mention of bacon is like food porn to me at this point. lol

I am kind of a carb nazi but I also know the joy of a good sandwich (I love baking in general and don't think I can ever give up baked goods). I make my own high Fiber sandwich rolls, but I get that this is not an option for everyone and I truly believe the sleeve can work with many different ways of eating in moderation.

I was never a Subway person, but I love steak sandwiches. Any hot meat sandwich really. The rolls I make have the same texture and density as normal sandwich rolls so I can tell you that at five months out, I can eat a 6 inch steak sandwich but I can only eat half at one meal and the other half at another. So if you get Subway when you reach this point it would be about two meals, depending on the size of your sleeve it could be more or less.

However, I was eating bread after 3 months, specifically the P28 Protein bread I saw mentioned on a ton of bariatric blogs. I ordered it online but health food stores sometimes have it. I ate it for the Protein, 14 grams per slice but the slices are gigantic and I could only eat one slice per meal. Just fold it in half. I lived off grilled muenster with onions and the bread also makes a great French toast.

I started eating bacon again after 4 months but I was disappointed...bacon is only 5 grams of Protein for three giant slices! That's just not right. I thought bacon was the ultimate meat-lover's food.< /p>

Anyway, didn't stop me from eating it because it's delicious but still

I didn't read all the other replies. I had my band removed and was converted to a sleeve May 8th, 4 1/2 months ago. I can eat half a sandwich, I do better if it's toasted. And when I say sandwich I mean on regular wheat or multigrain bread, not on a sub roll. I have had half of a breadstick (like the kind from Olive Garden). I can also eat whole grain pita without issues, but only about a 1/4 of it. And in that 4 1/2 months I have lost 56 pounds. I was told by my doctor that my weight loss would be slower due to the revision from the band. I went from a size 22, and today I was able to put on a size 12 with no problem. I was also told by my doctor that occasionally having a treat or indulgence would not stop my journey. The only thing I can't see to eat is ice cream, and I can't thin my cream Soups with milk. I do fine with sour cream, cheese, yogurt etc, but pure milk is not my friend.

I'm 18 months post op and I still can't eat a whole 6 in sub from subway. Too much bread in it. I could probably eat 1/3 of it if I pick off some bread.

I love bread but it fills me up so fast sometimes I'd rather pick through and eat more meat first so I won't be uncomfortable.

There are a few that I have seen!!!

They're at every sleeve forum and in every sleeve Facebook group. Since I love meat and cheese, low carb fits me well so they don't bother me but..they are definitely there.

I've been here a while ....there are lots of carb nazis! I'm 11 months out down 103 pounds and don't count carbs. I eat a half a sandwich several times a week.

I'm 3 months out & I'm not sure about sandwiches. I've never been crazy about sub sandwiches in general, but I do like wraps & flatbreads. Last night I went to a party & there was a great selection of cheeses, with assorted crackers & breads laid out. The baguette slices looked great, but I chose the crunchier multi-grain cracker just because I felt like it would be a better choice, digestively speaking. So far when I've had a sandwich or a taco or a burger, I have eaten the inside meat, cheese, & veggie and left the bread on the plate. I haven't tried Pasta yet, either. Like you, I want to embrace all foods in moderation...eventually. For me personally, until I'm further along in this weight loss journey, "moderation" in carbs is going to be less than what it might be someday down the road.

You will be able to eat a sandwich.... I'm just about eleven months out and my sandwiches are soooooo different but I eat them..... I use one piece of Ezekiel sesame bread toasted... Whatever lunch meat I want.... Reduced fat mayo if I want....a little lettuce, pickles.... Whatever really. The portion is SO much smaller, and the bread is always toasted but they are sandwiches. Also grilled chicken wraps with peppers onions and a little plain chiobani (instead of sour cream) for a healthy chicken fajita wrap. Grilled cheese (if I get my Protein in first) is still good too.

For the naysayers about carbs- I'm eleven months out, down over 125 pounds which is about 85% of my excess weight. I'm very careful about my diet.....and it's very healthy.... Everything in moderation works. Even carbs! ????

Thank you guys for replying to this and sharing your story. I am three weeks post op today and just starting soft meats. I have a long way to go but I'm on it. I cannot wait to just be relatively "normal" again.

Endless80, there is nothing wrong with that question. I am post sleeve 5 days and I think everyday. Oh I hope I can have that one day. Not that I want to eat poorly or go back to what I once ate but I am

Human. Clearly I acknowledge that I needed help. I went through a tough 5 days in MX to have irreversable surgery so that I can change my life style, eat healthier, make better choices and loose weight. That does not mean I am dead!!!!!

I dislike when people slam

Others for wanting a carb now and again or sandwich. I doubt too many spent the time money and effort to go through this to only eat what we once did

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
