I think you see what you want to see. If there 1,000 people who feel differently than the 1 person who displays an offensive bumper sticker, does that mean the prevalent opinion is the bumper sticker opinion, or the the opinion shared by the 1,000 people who are too busy with real lives to display stupid bumper stickers?

It only means that in this area, there is no shame in stating your ignorance or intolerance in public. There is no peer pressure to stop. And this is not the traditional South.

When I was standing in line in Publix recently,a Black man was standing there reading the words on a tee-shirt worn by a young white male that said "Bring Back the Good Old Says" under a picture of a Dog up on its hind legs being restrained by a policeman in obvious reference to the civil rights marchers of the 1960's There is a tension in the air. I wonder what would have happened if the Black man had said something. I wonder if the Black man would have said something if he was not (racially) outnumbered, 50 to one in that store at that time.

No, those shirts should not be censored or removed by the government, but should be shunned by the decent people. At the local mall, there was a kiosk selling the "Bring back the good old days" shirts with confederate flags and baiting comments. There needs to be peer pressure by good people.

My wife has dragged me away from these people because she says that I am too old. She is right. But my age should not be the deciding factor. I should not be alone.

I am not naive, though. I know there are people who have racial problems. I know there are PLENTY of people who just plain ignorant and basically rude, of all types of political persuasions.

The majority just mind their own business, and quietly decide who will do the best job. They want someone who thinks like they think, and who will make good decisions.

Did you notice the huge swing in the polls when the ads showing the white women (who was made to appear as if she might be nude) saying "call me Harold" were played on TV in the Tennessee Senate race? It is amazing how Harold Ford's numbers plummeted right after that ad came out, unless it was because of people changing their minds because of race.

I agree with Alex. Barak needs more experience, but I think he'd make a great future ticket. I too think a Clinton/Obama ticket would be good.

Take a trip to the south, I lived there for 10 years 30 miles from where the KKK started and never once seen a statue of the Grand wizard or the wizard of Oz or any other wizard! At the Saturn plant in Tennessee where my husband worked a man was fired just for wearing a hat with the Confederate flag on it. Also benefits were available to same sex couples but not a man and woman living together......... So please state the facts....

from what I've seen, southerners are no more or less likely to be racist then anyone else. I knew someone born and raised in a small town in Georgia, and while she doesn't dislike blacks, she doesn't think they are quite as good as whites.

My MIL, born and raised in NW Washington state is the most prejudiced person I know.

I did state the facts that I have seen and I assume you have stated facts that you have seen.

In the company that I worked for, for 35 years, only married couples got benefits for the first 15 years I was there, then they included unmarried heterosexual couples and finally in the last 10 years of my employment, gay couples.

It was a nationally known company and was based in Delaware, like may other large corporation are, because of tax benefits.

The biggest difference that I see between the "Conservative" South and the "Liberal" North regarding Race is that the New Yorkers tend to look around and lower their voice before saying certain words, but down here they aren't as careful.

I think there is a great deal of truth to that.

I think the majority of Americans (white and black) DO place race as a deciding factor in choosing their candidate and choosing alot of other things in their lives! Sometimes subconsciously!
