I'm 5 weeks out and on a soft diet. Last nite I was craving ice cream (the only sweets I've had are my Protein drink and yogurt) so I bought a pint and ate maybe 5 bites from it. Hubby kept telling me I was making a mistake.

Within 10 minutes, my stomach started cramping up. Within 45 minutes, I had about 20 minutes of diarrhea. It's now almost 12 hrs later and my stomach is still a little queasy (can't even drin my Protein shake or coffee). My dr said that there's no dumping with the sleeve, that it's for malabsortion surgery, like RNY. So I know thats not it - but hello...my sleeve doesn't like ice cream? Great. Now there's nor reason to go on (I know, I'm being dramatic)

Lesson learned. I will be tossing the rest of the pint (and I hate to waste anything). But hubbys on Atkins and they don't even come close to allowing ice cream

I WISH my sleeve reacted like that, because now you know not to eat it anymore! My sleeve can handle anything, including sweets, so I'm relying just on self control!

hmmmm, well maybe it's not "dumping syndrome, but it is close enough. Maybe your lactose tolerancxe has changed?

Well ice cream at 5 weeks is just a bad idea in general! Sorry :P

Dumping no dumping aside..

By the way my digestive system was still all kinds of messed up at 5 weeks.. Give it time you will be able to eat anything.

You could be lactose intolerant. My hubby became so after his sleeve. He also does through up if he eats too much or if something doesn't agree. He was sleeved 7/24/13.

I know this may sound strange but I am jealous. I may not get as ravenously hungry as I used to pre-sleeve and may not be able to eat nearly as much, but I still crave and tolerate sweets the select times I've tried them. Self control will make or break me.

Still, as you may have figured out, better to lay off the bad stuff for a while until you know you can enjoy in moderation. Your reaction to the ice cream may not be permanent but for now it's certainly good incentive to not eat it!

I am 6 months after surgery. I have found that I can't tolerate ice cream any more. I get the stomach cramping and upset stomach with it. I can tolerate other dairy (like cheese and yogurt) but I cannot tolerate ice cream.

How bout frozen yogurt? Not quit the same, but might get you through till you can have the real thing.

Ice cream = flavored fat. I prefer Greek or traditional yogurts over the "fatty" consistency of ice cream

I've tried the Tasso Greek Yogurt Bars. They only have 80 calories and 6 grams of Protein. I've only tried the coconut, but it's really good. sugar free Fudgesicles are good too, only 35 calories and 2 grams of protein. The Sugar free popsicles are only 15 calories each, no protein, but very refreshing. All great ice cream alternatives.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one this has happened to!! (Sorry) I've had I've cream twice and never (?) again?! I've had the cramping a few other times when I've forgotten to take my Pepcid. My nut was a little confused/uncertain about it since I can drink milk/ eat cheese and other dairy. It sucks but I'm also happy abt it lol

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
