UHC Choice plus-won't cover?

Recommended Posts

slynbrown: I also have UHC Choice Plus. Sounds like I have close to the same policy as yours. Didnt have to have anything besides my bmi of 40+ I was so lucky that they didnt require anything else because I hardly ever went to the Dr before. So there would have been no why I could have come up with the 5 year history. The insurance office for the Dr I used made sure of all of the requirements before sending in my info. vbmenu_register("postmenu_489414", true); vbmenu_register("postmenu_489414", true);

Monica, I am approved. How is your recovery going? Is there anything that I should be worried about?

Yea, that was fast. Im doing great almost no pain at all. I have my 2 week postop today and plan on asking dr to go ahead and release me to return to work. Im getting bored just sitting at home all day. I was lucky, I didnt have any of the gas pains or anything that others complain about. I credit that to the fact that my dr did keep me in the hospital overnight and they made sure that I was up every couple of hours to walk.

According to my scale at home I have lost about 20lbs since the beginnning of preop. Im going to add my weight ticker after I come back from the dr with an official weight. Good luck:clap2:

I have been reading these posts for a couple months now. I am going through the process of getting insurance approval.I have UHC Choice. I went through all the preliminary lab testing, Psychological testing, seminar, and nutritonal class. My dr office submitted the paperwork to UHC on May 9th. I have contacted them every week for the last three weeks to make sure they had the paperwork. Every time I called they said they had not received anything. Finally I got my dr office to call where they found out about the fax number being changed for pre-determination. So finally after about 6 weeks they have faxed it to the RIGHT number- i should hopefully have an answer sometime next week. Just wanted to share my experience-that way if anyone else is having the same problem- they should contact uhc direct to get the correct info.

Hey Stacy. That is just awful! My paperwork was submitted to UHC today so my waiting game begins too. But hopefully since yours royally messed up, the approval will be recieved right away. And thanks for the headsup on the new number for UHC. I will call next week and if no one has recieved it, I will get the office to call.

Good Luck@

Mary, good luck to you as well. I know that once they actually get it -it should go fairly fast-that is if your Dr. submitted everything they need. Anyways, definitely follow up.

Hello all,

This is my first post, I have been a lurker.

My Dr submitted the paperwork to United HealthCare (Choice plus) 3 weeks ago. I called today and checked up and they said that UHC needs a 5 year weight history. I am really worried because here is my 6 year history:

2001: BMI=52

2002: BMI=39

2003: BMI=35

2004: BMI=39

2005: BMI=45

2006: BMI=45

I had a flunctuation and went down to a BMI of 35 because I was starving myself and working out for my wedding. Do you think this will prevent them from approving me because I haven't been over 40 BMI consistently for the last 5 years? Any advice or experience is appreciated!

Thanks,

Martie

DFW, Dr. Marsden

I have UHC, and was approved and banded earlier this month. I too was worried about what extra's they would need to approve.

My BMI was 37 and I have high blood pressure, and a family hx of diabetes and heart disease. I got a copy of my weight history from my regular doctor, from all my previous visits for things....(they always weigh you, and take your bp when you go in) Anyway, by weight fluctuated from 200-235 throughout my history. (which was since 1998)

My surgeons office submitted the paper work on a Tuesday, and told me it would probably be a few weeks till we heard anything, so I called UHC that Friday to see if they had recieved everything they needed and to check the status. They told me then I was approved, and had sent my approval letter that day. It was quick all in all. I didn't think it would be that easy, I was expecting a denial.

Hope this helps anyone in waiting. Good luck to you all.

Wow! That is great news!! I too have UHC. My info is to be submitted this coming Tuesday. I have a BMI of 43, have diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, sleep apnea, chronic venous stasis, and a family history of heart disease. I provided my charts from doctors visits from the part 18 months. I am so anxious to get approved. I would like to have surgery during the time that my son is on summer break from school. That way he can spend the night with other family members and I can concentrate on healing. Thanks for some hope!!

You need to involve your Doc in a appeal of their decision. I am a nurse and have a band and take care of banded patients. Nine out of ten have to fight tooyh and nail with their insurance.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
