Postpartum hair loss?

Recommended Posts

I'm waiting on some labs but wanted to ask about the post baby shedding we experience.

Moms that have delivered babies post sleeve: Did you notice more shedding, along the lines of the month 3-4 post op hair loss, after your baby?

I've been losing quite a bit and while I'm not frantic I'm certainly not pleased. My doc ran a panel and is also concerned about my thyroid but in the meantime I'm just curious if anyone else encountered this after having a baby, too.

This was my third pregnancy and both previous pregnancies I had increased shedding after delivery. While it was noticeable, it wasn't a huge amount of hair. I'm currently experiencing loss similar to what I had in those early months post VSG. In other words, quite a bit!

Any input or shared experiences are appreciated!

Go back to the basics! YOU NEED MORE PROTEIN! Start with 150-160 grams a day till shedding stops, then go down to 70-90 grams a day. Also go to Walgreens pick up Hair, nails and skin Vitamins along with Biotin.. I also do BLACK TEA rinse (10 bags). The caffeine in it stimulate the scalp and stop the shedding.. But if your hair is coming out your body is lacking Protein so it is taking it from your hair! Protein helps your heart, muscles and other organs function. When it is low it pulls it from other parts of the body. Bottom line! Lol you need more protein. I hope my gibberish helped!

I was told that your hair gets thicker during pregnancy and then returns to "normal" post partum. This was pre VSG, though.

My hair never fell out during pregnancy.. It grew like crazy even after.. But I ate a lot of Protein and veg. Not much carbs. Plus u kept my hair in protective styles, Buns, braids etc. but this is true your hair gets thicker because your body shoots off a mass amount of Protein to feed fetus.. But how you protect your hair, skin, and nails after VSG is protein, eat stuff that is high in protein, salmon, chicken etc. Protein shakes etc. you will see your hair grow supper long. Mine has and I'm 10 days Pre op. but I have been growing my hair foe 3 years now.. Plus I take Vitamins. My hair grow a half a inch to a inch each month when it is in its growing phase.. Our hair goes through 3 phases. Rest, Grow, and Shed.. Down load the app called Long hair forum. I have learned so much and have seen so much progress in me and my girls hair growth.. Both of my girls hair is in the middle of their backs and mine is shoulder length and I did a big chop last November.. My Nut says their is no reason why our hair should be falling out unless we are not getting enough protein. And I believe it...

But I almost never fall below 80 grams of Protein a day and most days I'm between 90-110 grams. I've pushed Protein from just a few months out and am one of the few still doing protein shakes at three years out. Getting in more than 120 grams of protein a day would be tremendously challenging (restriction is a blessing and a curse) and would likely put me on two or three shakes a day just to get there, not to mention keep me from drinking much plain Water and eating as much protein at my regular meals. Hmm.

Now I'm wondering if something will come back on my labs. My doc was concerned first and foremost about a thyroid problem, so we'll see what happens. It may be that this is a hormonal thing or it might be an issue other than diet. I eat a diet chock full of protein and healthy fats, but I have a number of hormonal issues (insulin resistance and endometriosis, and a doctor convinced the answer lies in taking more hormones to combat those issues) so I'm starting to wonder if this is something else.

But what I'm experiencing is not the same as my usual post pregnancy shedding. And I never really got the nice, thick head of pregnancy hair, either. This is my third pregnancy/fourth child - I thought I knew what to expect on this front, but it's my first child post sleeve. However, it could just be more noticeable this time because my hair never fully recovered and went back to it's usual thickness.

Oh well, we'll see what the labs say and just in case I'll boost my protein a bit anyway. Thanks for the ideas!

While pregnant you do not shed any hair. So once your body isn't pregnant anymore and hormones stabalize you will have significant hair shedding

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
