Any Type 1 diabetics here?

Recommended Posts

I need some advice. I have a band and type 1 diabetes. I follow protocol to a T and have not dropped an ounce in over a year. My question is, would a sleeve be any different, considering they are both restrictive procedures? I am lost and frustrated, depression is setting in big time. What makes it all the worse, is my husband also has a band and is losing like crazy. He eats WAY more than me and exercises much less. I want to be happy for him, but I am so envious it's killing me inside. I know it has quite a bit to do with insulin, so my doctor told me to think about revision. I am just frightened that if I go under the knife again to be sleeved, that its not going to be much different. Any advice welcomed.

I wish I could answer. I'm an ex-bander considering a sleeve and can't believe there aren't ANY type 1s on this site. How is that possible?!

Did you go for the sleeve or are you still banded?

I am a type 1 diabetic and just had the sleeve done - literally 6 days post op. I am down 11 lbs already. I am still on a clear liquid diet. I would be happy to answer any questions you guys have. I searched and searched for type 1's who had this surgery and found no one so I am going it alone!!

Please keep us updated! have you had any improvement in your blood sugars? I was given a surgery date of February 13th and am super anxious. I am hoping this improves my diabetes. Other than my type 1 diabetes I have no other major health concerns but my sugars are out of control and I feel sick daily. I had the lap band in 2009 then had to have it removed in 2012. I am desperate to be feeling better!

Good luck in your recovery and thanks for responding.

How is it that we always find these forums and information after we've gone it alone?! I just had my sleeve surgery 3 days ago and searched for other type 1's doing the same. Anyway, glad to find these posts. Don't know if anyone is still on here, but hopefully the next person will find these and feel better about their decisions. I'm doing fantastic so far, have reduced my insulin needs already by more than half. I did run a bit high before and during the surgery, but that was on purpose to keep from getting lows. Can't wait to see what it will be like one week, one month, one year from now. Did this to save my life, so now I'm ready to start living it!!!

T1 diabetic since I was 12...it will be 1month tomorrow since I've had surgery. My insulin use is down dramatically! I'm on an insulin pump. If I get anything out of having this surgery, it will be better control of my diabetes. Looking back at the posts I'm kinda late, but I hope you all are doing well! Best of luck and health!

I am a type 1 diabetic who is on a pump as well. I know I can't get rid of this pump, but will be happy to reduce my insulin needs. I am getting sleeved March 7th and am a bit worried about having to undergo additional tests due to the diabetes. My caridiologist has already done an EKG and ordered a stress test and an echocardiogram. Every doctor I see seems to want to tell me that this won't help my pump dependence - I get that they want to be sure I know that, but I am aware that my body doesn't make much insulin so I will never be without this pump.

I couldn't find information on type 1 diabetics who've undergone WLS either - but ironically it was my endo who pushed me to go do it.

I have type 1 and am on the pump, I had RNY a year ago today! The best decision ever! Down 75 pounds and the healthiest I have ever been .

I knew that the operation will not affect my diabetes in the long run( apart from the fact that I take less Insulin because I eat less Carbs)

I am a type-1 pumper. I was sleeved 12/08/15. I have lost 25 pounds since day of surgery. I am on less than half of the insulin I was on before surgery. I am also off of 3 blood pressure meds, and all of my cholesterol meds. My blood sugars have been great, and I've only had 2 lows that needed to be treated, which I do with skim milk. I feel great and have a lot of energy, which I didn't expect. I upload my blood sugars with carelink(I have a Medtronic minimed) to my endocrinologist once a week and they adjust as needed. It has been a blessing and I couldn't be happier with the decision!

I'm a T1 of 40 years. I'm going through the preliminary 3 month approval process. My BMI is a little over 35, so I'm trying to keep my weight steady until approval by my insurance. I've been mostly concerned about my sugars after surgery. My goto for lows, especially in the middle of the night, has been a Peanut Butter sandwich. I'm afraid it might be the death of me. I'm glad I found this group to share joy and commiserate with. ????

I found after the operation that I could only use sugar in forms of liquid for my hypo's as I couldn't eat sweet food quick enough and it would make me feel sick, so I have apple juice cartons and small glucose ( liquid) with me for my hypo's

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
