Walking Isnt Enough

Recommended Posts

My doctor seemed a little disappointed too that I was walking. I was kind of surprised. I thought that's what I should've been doing. I continued my walks, but I'm incorporating other cardio as well.

He wanted my heart rate at a certain # for at least 30 mins.

180 - your age = your work out heart rate

So that what I'm working towards.

Don't beat yourself up about this! Walking that much did your body good!

Walking is good for you. Especially if you walk fast enough to get & keep your heart rate up during your walk. So if you like walking, don't stop, just speed up some. Maybe carry some hand weights & work your arms as you stride. Power walk or maybe try jogging.

For some strength training, you can get a resistance band from Walmart or a place similar for only a couple of bucks. It actually works.

Find what works for you and make adjustments with that. Please don't get discouraged. Just hang in there. You'll be just fine. Good luck!

I was sleeved on March 25' date=' 2013. So far I have lost 45 pounds. I am very happy with it so far and hope to lose another 55 to reach my ultimate goal.

I went to see my surgeon for my three month check up. He was happy with my loss but very disappointed in my exercise. I told him I was going for 60-90 minute walks about 4-5 times a week. He said, "Walking is activity, it is not exercise. You need to get your heart rate up higher."

Ok, fine. He is right, I know. But ever since he said that I feel as if walking just isn't good enough and I gave up completely doing it. Now I do nothing. Its like if its not good enough then why even try. I feel guilty and ashamed of myself but its almost as if why do it if it doesn't count. I cant get myself to workout in the gym, despite a high monthly fee and prepaid personal training sessions. I just lack any motivation now.

How do you get back on track? What worked for you? What kind of exercise do you do? I need a swift kick in the rear I think!! I want to tone up but Im afraid of failing. Im afraid of being sore. Hell, I may even be afraid of succeeding.[/quote']

If you like dancing try Zumba. I also liked Rockin Body by Shaun T. I'm 5 weeks out and starting my exercise regimen today. Starting is THE WORST. I love it after I start. We can motivate each other if you like ;)

Hi Divadoll_98 :) Not sure if you'll get this since the last post was a month ago but was wondering how Rockin Body worked for you? I'm having surgery Sept 19th and plan on joining Beachbody and doing shakeology and Rockin Body, Turbo Fire then Insanity since my good friend is a Beachbody coach... Was just trying to inquire on your personal progress with Rockin Body... Thanks so much

Thanks so much SheWins1 ... I've done Rockin Body in the past and that also has modified, it seems all the Beachbody DVD's have someone doing a modified version which is awesome considering I won't be able to really exert myself in the beginning ... When did you have surgery?

That's great SheWins1! Yea the YMCA by me is expensive also to join... I am going to be doing a lot of walking and the modified version of Rockin Body and cycling when my doc tells me I'm cleared to do it.

I'm 35...My highest weight was 289, right now I'm 275 and my doc said I didn't need to do the pre-op diet prior to surgery on 9/19 but I have been watching what I eat.

Sometimes its ok to challenge our selves. Sounds like whats holding you back is the fear of the unknown. It will take some time to break it, but if you work on it, you will feel better. Walking is good, but strength training is better. You will burn more calories and it will help tighetn your skin. Push yourself, give it a try. Don't be embaressed. Start slow....Look on groupon for deals near you! I brought a great deal, strength training 3 times a week for one month=$50. Reg fee is $220 per month. I love it so much that I will be payin reg fee the next 2 months. Once again, I know its not easy, but we must believe in ourselves and always challenege in order to GROW....Good luck to you, I know you can do it

Sometimes? Ha! The day is not complete if we are not challenging ourselves in all things.

You know what? I did Curves for the last 9 years. Everyone who ever "deemed" themselves an "expert" on fitness, health and nutrition would always say "it's not good enough" and you know what? I told them to eff off (nicely.)

For 9 years I got up before 5 am and made Curves my first priority. Sometimes it was 3 times a week. Sometimes 4 and sometimes 5. So was I out running marathons and competeing in body building competitions? NO. But was I getting UP off the couch and MOVING my body, building muscles, and improving my cardiovascular system. And it was CONSISTENT exercise. I never quit, I never gave up and in the last 9 years the MOST time that I was away from working out at Curves was the 6 weeks I had to take off from it following my VSG surgery.

Now in the last two years I have added in so much more exercise that I finally did let go of my beloved Curves (just finally ended in May.) I'm so much stronger and fitter now than I ever have been before, and I know that my easy recovery was a nod to Curves and how it prepared my body. But if I had listened to all the naysayers then by all means I *should* have quit Curves a long time ago.

Figure out what you like to do, make it a priority, do it consistently, and then just when you think you have the hang of it, challenge yourself to do more.

Hang in there...get walking again...start small and keep going!!!

I think your Dr was not being supportive of what you are doing. Now you are doing nothing because your feeling like your not good enough to succeed. Truth is from my own personal experience with weight loss pre sleeve exercise and weight training worked only when I was able to get my metabolism boosted. Once that happen for me my body was like a weight dropping machine. After exercise For the longest I would eat grilled chicken and Bush's fat free Beans through out the day for meals, and the occasional high calorie meal once a week. I dropped a pound everyday for quite some time. I only wish that I still had that old me back where I was athletic and felt super human at times. I lost 94 lbs, I was on top of the world. I just did a variety of exercises. I never did anything that was too strenuous I would walk 26 laps in the gym to equal a mile, I would play solo basketball, and lift up to 120 pounds on the bench mixed with dumbbells. I did this for 4 days a week for a total of 10 months, and I was very happy with the results, I just couldn't keep it off. My point to you is find a routine that suit syou as long as your staying active your doing a lot better than just sitting there waiting for something to happen. Not all doctors are created equal, (: just my opinion........

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
