I'm 5 weeks post op so I know it's still early but I have a question. Will I ever be able to eat more then 3 or 4 bites and drink with my meals?

Congrats on your surgery! In my experience, yes you will be able to eat about 4oz. at a sitting. I'm at 7 months, and my NUT told me this may increase. This will also vary slightly on what you are eating, I can only get in about 3oz. of dense Protein (steak). I was instructed NOT to drink with meals ever. It was explained to me that it was for a few reasons. You can only hold a few ounces when you eat, liquids take up room in your stomach and will limit your nutrional intake at meals. Also that drinking while eating speeds up digetstion a bit. You want your food to satisfy you as long as possible.

Good luck!!

Totally agree with the don't drink and eat together!!

I also agree that you will be able to eat more, depending on what it is. I am 9 months out and I have 5 or 6 small meals a day. A snack is probably 1 or 2 ounces a meal is probably 3 or 4 ounces. For dinner I can eat about 3 ounces of chicken and probably 3 or 4 bites of veggie, as an example.

I can eat a Quest Protein bar as a snack or lunch. I can eat 2 ounces of lunch meat with some lettuce as bread for lunch.

So you will be able to eat more. But sometimes when it tastes so good and you just want to have more you just will not be able to. It will be too uncomfortable to continue and it makes it very easy not to over indulge. I try very hard to listen to my body and stop before over indulging even if "but it tastes so good."

I'm 6 weeks and was told that you will be able to eat about a 1 - 1.5 cups after about a year. But most Vets that I know said they still have probs when they try and drink with a meal. I do wonder if it really bothers them or if they are so used to not doing it that it feels weird.

Dr. Davidson's dietitian told us that he NEVER wants his patients to eat more than a cup of food at a time. I am over three years out and I still cannot eat a cup of food, close but not quite. Some stuff, I can only eat a little over a half cup. This is GREAT, we don't want to eat much. I hope it never changes, never increases!! We are NEVER suppose to drink with out meals, that needs to become habit, natural....just the way you do things. You'll get use to it. Celebrate your new normal, this is why we had the majority of our tummy removed!!!! Good luck!!

I am 3 weeks PO and I , too, find it frustrating to only be able to eat a minicsule amount (end up wasting ALOT becuase you can't "cook" a meal small enough for just 3-4 bites!) And then 4 days later when you have 1/2 the meal still left..... you don't really (at least i don't) want it. ARRRGH!

Of course I did this for the REASON of not being able to eat that much to increase weight loss.... but I guess I just didn;t know it would be this difficult (at least for me....)

And to top it off.... my weight loss has stalled and I've only lost 12 lbs (not including the 12 lbs of Water I gained in the hospital....) grrrrrrr.....

Feeling frustrated.......

Disco I'm with you. I'm apparently a slowwwwwww loser. At six weeks I'm only 11 lbs down. My clothes feel no looser either. So yeah I feel your frustration.

One thing I did that has helped me is to buy the mini muffin tins. I now make a crust less mini quiche (finally something I don't throw up). I've found 3 of these keeps me full and I'm finally getting close to my Protein goal.

I also bought the mini bread loaves so I hope once I can keep more things down I'll make mini veggie/meat lasagna. Using the mini tins makes my life easier and I'm not so frustrated because the servings are perfect.

Twelve lbs in three weeks is quite an achievement, your glass is half full, not half empty!! Celebrate, do a happy dance!!! Congrats!! Eating less is GOOD!!! At three years out, I cannot eat a cup of food, I PRAY that I never can. I love where I'm at. Before long, you'll be eating a little more and in your mind, freaking out because you can!! I STiLL ask my husband, "Did I eat a lot?" He says I have the digestive tract of a hummingbird or field mouse!! Love it!

You are right! I am VERY happy that I have lost the 12 pounds, I think I got the "idea" from a friend sleeved on 4/29 who has lost like 50lbs, that in the first month (she lost like 30 + lbs that first month) I would "lose sooooooo much" as she did, so when that expectation fell short..... I have been in this "funky place" of feeling like "am I EVVVVVVER going to lose any more than THIS???

It makes me feel better to know that I will eventually feel a bit more "normal"..... lol... or my "new normal",that is

So, I am truly happy that I have lost 12, and just want to get the "loss train" going again!!! :-)

I am about 6 weeks out... i can eat more of some stuff than others..... for example... chicken... can't eat a lot of it... but last night i had salmon with a small salad and that went down great... I like feeling like i can't eat anymore, it makes me not want anymore. and while everyone else at dinner had desert, i knew i couldn't.... my aunt is 5 years out... and she still only eats half her meal. so i am optomistic that it will be the same for me

I know exactly how you feel. Im 3wks post op and have lost 20lbs since surgery. I have a friend that lost 42lbs in a month and I was really hoping for that as well. But hey 12,15,20lbs lost is way much better than gained right?!!! It's a new life style thats all no miracles here. As for the cooking you are right...lol i made some chicken noodle Soup for myself and ended making 1/2 a pot waaaaayyyy to much so I had to throw out after 2 days :-(

I went to eat out and ordered the mash-potatoes from kids meal.... Yeah I had to ask for a to go box!!!! Lol I was laughing because I would have eating that in 2secs.... My cousin said Im becoming a cheap date!!!! Only cost $3.00 and I had food for the next day!!!!

Keep up the good spirit and look forward a better feature awaits you!!!!

Oh wow I can't do salad until I'm at least 2 months (maybe 3) out. My Dr. told me to avoid raw veggies for a few months. How did the salad go down?

That is one of the only foods I miss. I love salads!

I told my coworker that I was a cheap date. She laughed until we went to lunch. Now she doesn't want to take turns treating because she said I'm getting the raw deal. I had to tell her that if I invite you out, I still expect you to eat what you want.

Funny thing is that she only orders the same thing so I always know what to expect. She's a cheap date too.

I remember at the beginning feeling like I wish things were moving faster, that my clothes were looser, that I looked different. At 50 pounds I still wasn't even getting many comments and I could still fit in some of the clothes I had. But after the 50 pound mark it just seemed like things really picked up. Those 50 pounds took probably 4 months and now I have lost another 50 in 5 months, but those are the 50 that people really noticed. So don't be discouraged,go about your life, eat right, exercise and you will begin to see the difference and before you know it you will be nine months out and super happy with your progress!

And I love that I can go out to eat and get 2, 3, 4 meals out of one meal! (I am a couponer so I love a good deal LOL!)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
