Restaurants and gastric sleeve card

Recommended Posts

What are some restaurants that honor the sleeve card so you can get a child's plate? I'm having trouble finding some.

I'm not sure, I didn't get a card. You could just order an appetizer or what you normally would and take leftovers home. That's what I've done since I've had surgery, it has worked out great so far. Unless you don't like leftovers then that wouldn't be so good for you.

I didn't know there was such a card!

my surgeon gave me a card, and it allows me to order off the kids or seniors menu. I have better luck with seniors menus, as kids meals are usually crap food. But I find that I save more money by just ordering an entrée ala cart, and then have a bite of my hubby or daughters sides if I have room.

I have eaten at most restaurants, and have not had any trouble with the card. Some of them have not heard of it but have been really great. Some ask to show their managers so they can become aware of it. Some have even asked to copy it so they can send it to corporate offices to make things easier for others.

You can print them from the internet. Restaurants do not have to honor them, it just explains you have had weight loss surgery and ask if them to please let you order from the child menu. It also tells everyone you had the surgery, so no privacy if that's important to you. I never got a card, and have found that if I explain I recently had surgery, they let me get whatever I want. No need to explain the type of surgery (although I usually do).

http://www.obesityhelp.com/magazine/RestaurantCard.html Is one example of the card, and a list of places that take it. I will say Olive Garden does have a grilled chicken kids meal that is really good.

I was never offered a card, but on the few occasions I've politely asked to order off the senior or children's menu, I've never been turned down. Most times I order regular dishes and bring the leftovers home for additional meals.

I've never used the card. I'd much rather be able to bring leftovers home :) Although yesterday I had lunch with friends at a HuHot. I did ask if I could pay the child's price and mentioned that I'd had wls, so I'd only have a tiny amount of food. Nope, they don't do that. Oh well, I just won't go there very often. (Criminies, their weekend price is $11.99 and you can't take the leftovers home.) I've only been there twice in the last year since surgery. Any other restaurant meal gives me at least three more meals with the leftovers, so it's pretty economical. (Or a meal for me and one for the hubs from my leftovers.)

I got the card but I haven't used it. I just order off the kids menu if I want something. Generally, I get an appetizer if I want something smaller.

Tonight we went to a seafood place, bonefish grill, and my husband ordered. I asked if they had any smaller portions of the main menu and the waitress said my husband could "add on" a half portion of just about anything on the menu. I had 2 large scallops, 2 shrimp, some spinach and some goat cheese as an "add on" and it was only $10, vs the $22 for the full sized meal. I figure that it wouldn't reheat very well, so I did the half. After my husband tried a bite of each, it was just a bit more than I could eat so I ended up sending a few bites back anyway. My point is, it's always a good idea to ask if they offer an add on or upgrade option.

Olive Garden recently rolled out with a small bites menu- there's a few things on there that are Protein heavy and cheap! Perfect for sleevers! Grilled chicken Spiedini with a red wine sauce, meatballs, and asparagus are some of the choices. Make sure to go, and if you like it, let the restaurant chain know- they're trying this concept out so it's not guaranteed to be permanent.

I'm almost 6 wks post. Any suggestions on what to eat if we go out. Also ideas at home.

I ordered off the appetizer menu early out. Shrimp Cocktail and Crab Cocktail were my favs. Scallops are also good. Some restaurants have chicken, beef, or lamb kabobs on the appetizer menu too. appetizers are perfect early out because you probably won't be able to finish even that and everyone likes to share an appetizer. Soup is another option if it is something you like. I try to check out the menu online before I go.

At home, if you are mostly cooking for yourself, look for Protein foods that are easy to prepare and reheat or cook in small portions. I get a costco rotisserie chicken and use the meat in lots of different ways. In stir fry, with BBQ Sauce, or mixed with a tiny bit of mayo and chopped celery. I can't eat the whole chicken before it spoils, so I pull the meat off and bag it in portions and freeze. Frozen shrimp are good too because you can shake out just as many as you want. I also portion ground beef and bag and freeze. I like frozen veggies for the same reason. I also eat lots of lunch meat, greek yogurt, and I have soy milk. Canned low fat chili was another early fav of mine.

If you are cooking for your family, just make sure your meal includes a dense Protein. They can eat everything else and you will be able to measure out your protein and have a bite or two of other dishes you make for dinner. So, for example, if you make a stir fry for dinner, add a few extra ounces of meat, fish. or poultry. Scoop out the protein for your meal portion before serving the family.

I use a scale to measure most foods because it's so easy. I set my plate on the scale, 0 the scale, then add my desired amount of protein. At 6 weeks, that was about an ounce for me. I had to have 1-2 Protein drinks to get enough protein in. I generally had one for Breakfast and one after dinner.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
