Be honest - does anyone regret the surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was 47, 5'6" and 235 pounds. I hadn't seen a healthy weight since grade school. My surgeon told me at consult I should lose 100 pounds. I decided to stop just short of that, (with his blessing), at a 90+ pound loss and I've had NOT ONE REGRET. My procedure went easier than I expected, I was able to make the changes necessary, (adding exercise, hitting Protein goals, etc.), and I've actually been able to maintain the loss this time. I still have to work at it, but it's a battle I'm willing for the first time EVER! It forced me into Portion Control which is exactly what I needed to avoid backsliding. Best decision ever! No regrets!

Not for one minute actually. Not even immediately after surgery. Not during the three weeks of liquids only that I was allowed on my plan, not during the three weeks after that of only soft foods.

:) Super happy with my decision. Currently 7 months out.

I'm in my process of getting the sleeve. Doing the carb/protein small meals 6x a day. I can't wait to have mine. I have had so issues with my step mom. She is totally not wanting me to do it. You are younger than me I do understand why you feel this way.

I'm 41 and need to lose about 100 lbs. Im going through the steps to get cleared by insurance, but I go back and forth? Should I just try a serious diet one more time (even though I've been steadily gaining this weight since my mid-20s and dieting off and on the whole time). Does anyone regret having the surgery?? I know its nerves, but its so drastic to remove part of your stomach...

you sound like me. Should I shouldn't i. I'm scheduled for Monday 5/18. I haven't met one person on any of the boards or Facebook that regret their decision

Having this surgery was possibly the best decision I've ever made. I had all of the typical health problems beforehand and all are cured now.

Additionally, I'm physically fit and considered extremely healthy by my doctors. I didn't expect the transition to be as great as it's been.

Wow Mrs G's Journey we have similar stories. My mom was also diagnosed with breast CA in 2013. The day the doctor told me i had diabetes and had to take medicine for it just killed me. I couldn't imagine a life with this disease and immediately started preparing for my sleeve. I have an EGD left and they should be able to ask foe insurance approval. I hate takibg that medicine and checking my blood sugar. I am glad to here you had your sleeve and the medicine is gone!! That is alot to look forwaed to. Please tell me more.

Taken off diabetes meds while still in the hospital post-op. They stopped my BP and cholesterol meds before surgery and resumed reduced dosage of BP shortly afterward but monitored me closely. Cholesterol meds never resumed.

YES!! I hope to be able to someday say I don't regret it. But everyone is different and might not go thru what I am going thru. I hope no one goes thru what I am going thru.

There are many days that I do regret my surgery, but I realize that it is from personal issues that were not dealt with prior. Any complications I have from the surgery are absolutely minor. The only reason I sometimes regret it is because of my own emotional state, not because of my actually surgery! Wouldn't change anything!

I don't regret the surgery but there are negative side effects. Won't go until all of them just know sometimes it's very very hard.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
