August 2013 Roll Call

Recommended Posts

Im scheduled for the 8th... How long does everyone have to go on their pre-op liquid diet for?

Im supposed to do 2 weeks, Clear liquids only. ITS HARD!!!

Is anyone allowed food? If so, what are you allowed to have?

I've been on my 2 week pre-op since July 22nd and can have food. Just nothing high carb. I have had to stay 30 gms of carbs or less and 70 gms or more of Protein daily. It hasn't been an issue for me. Protein shakes for Breakfast and for lunch, tuna fish mixed with a tbls of mayo and Jello, then a Protein shake for mid-afternoon, sometimes a cheese stick or two, and then no carb vegies and meat for dinner. Haven't had any problem with it. Also haven't lost any weight to speak of either. <lol> But was told the goal was liver shrink, not calorie reduction.

Some people are so rude, they think surgery is the easy way. What are they thinking? I do not know anyone who wants to be fat or unhealthy......So for all the haters....Keep them at a distance. They are negative energy that none of us on this journey needs. August 27th is my date and all I want is positive people around me. May we all do well and suceed!

Do most people have a hospital stay? I will just be in a recovery room for a few hours then go home <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> Makes me worried.

My doctor said I will be inpatient 24-48 hours post. I have read in the past on here that some do have it done as "outpatient" and go home same day.

Yes I am still here and I had it done at 9 am on Thursday and I am still here. I am glad I have been here due to any pain I've been having easily maintained! Every doctor is different

Had my last pre-op hoop to jump through today...hope to get my surgery date when I meet with the surgeon's PA on Tuesday. I think it would be unusual not to swing to polar opposites emotionally as we approach our respective dates.

This is a pretty radical choice we've made afterall' date=' isn't it? :)

We can do this...we see success stories on this wonderful forum everyday. We also see the hardships we are about to encounter, and we see people rise above and keep moving forward. These are the things that empower us, and give us the inspiration and the courage to do something so very radical. I think this is the reason most of us are on this site in the first place...folks reaching out to one another in support and friendship.

We can do this. <3[/quote']

Yes great decision I tell myself on day 3 as I struggle, I just try to stay focused on the end result.

Thx for the encouragement. So your EKG was abnormal and they found nothing wrong when you took the stress test. That's what I'm really worried about. Hope I did not have some type of mild heart attack or something and I didn't know it. I've been battling HBP since I had my 3 yr old daughter. I can't seem to keep it low. Funny the same problem that prompt me to get the sleeve is the same problem that's delaying it.

Yes! I had 2 irregular ekgs that's why I had to have the stress test and I was worried about all you saying because I have HBP as well and sometimes had minor chest pains. Thank goodness all was ruled out and her I go on day 3 and it's been kinda tough especially cause I'm off on weekends so it even harder. I could do one meal but None is ugly. I'm scheduled for Aug 13th and was not long ago where you were it will all be fine stay encouraged.

Yes I'm in the same boat as you only on day 3 and it has been tough, I could understand at least one diet meal but NOTHING. It's definitely been a challenge I just try to stay focused on the end result and not think what have I got myself into.

Thx for this do ease my mind a bit. My first few days was horrible. Eventually I found what works for me. I found some Protein shots by carnivorous from GNC which had 50g of good Proteins. You drink them like a 5hr drink. I would drink them in the morning. They actually took away that hunger feeling. They would last me to lunch or beyond. I had a cup of Soup for lunch a Greek yogurt because Greek has the most Protein. Then another protein shot right before I start to cook dinner to help maintain my urge while I cooked dinner for the family. In between I had fat/sugar free Jello, pudding or a really cold Isopure if I was just bored and wanted something. And yes I cheated. Nothing major a cracker or two with my Soup and a pinch of something once or twice, which I don't recommend. But I called my nurse and she pretty much gave me a slap on the hand and said don't do it again. Especially the last few days right before surgery so your stomach is empty. She even recommended taking some Miralax a couple of nights before surgery.

Well that's what worked for me. Although unnecessary. I hope this helps and you find what works for you. And you know the funny thing is that now that I can eat again I can't. My stomach don't like all that bad stuff apparently. Tore my stomach up. Guess I'll go back to my diet and ease my way to healthier things. Again good luck and please keep us posted.

Thank you for all the answers about a hospital stay. I guess I should just trust my Dr. that I will be okay at home. I will be alone the day after the surgery, hubby has to work. Will I be okay or should I have a family member come over?

I am scheduled for 8/8 in Lexington, Ky. I have been on the pre-surgery diet for 25 days. First week was rough. Not counting fat or sugar. Just up to 30 carbs daily. Have lost 11 pounds. First 3-4 days were the worst. Saving grace has been Atkins chocolate / Peanut Butter bars (2 carbs), EAS chocolate fudge Protein Drinks (3 carbs) and Pork rinds (0 carbs). I will start a liquid diet on Tuesday and surgery on Thursday. Anybody else scheduled soon at St Joseph East in Lexington?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
