Once again...

LOL Totally not taking this personally. I have actually followed my doctor's instructions to a T. That doesnt mean that I think people are wrong when they don't. I am replying to YOUR post that I happen to disagree with. Isnt that what this website it about? You post your opinion, I post mine. Sorry if YOU are getting offended by me not agreeing with you.

Now back to the original topic... I would love a piece of pizza. I just might go take a bite & spit it out! haha

I'm not offended. Glad your not, because yes this website is about exchanging ideas and opinions.

I'm not worried that you don't agree with me.

At the end of the day we will follow our own paths after this surgery, will they lead to the same place? I don't know... but I do hope other people here will read this post and have adequate information from both sides.

P.s. I like pizza too and have had a bite or two in the last couple of months. And for the record, I always swallow :P

I have fallen off the wagon..i'm 16 days out today we had company & order pizza. I had two bites of cheese pizza, chewed it well & swallowed it went down fine, & now I realize i'm not missing it.

Isn't the whole point of WLS to make ourselves healthier and to not eat these types of bad foods. Seems to me that this is defeating the whole point of this and were only hurting ourselves. Especially in the beginning stages, we shouldn't allow ourselves the taste of it because it will make us want it down the road. This is just my opinion.

I think the healthier attitude is that there aren't any BAD foods. It's all about moderation, making good choices the majority of the time, etc. And sometimes, after surgery, you find that your tastes have changed...so if you (and I mean this in the "general" you, not to anyone in particular!) don't try something (when you're allowed, of course), then you could be spending a lot of mental energy thinking you want something...when you really don't.

For example, when I ate the pizza toppings, I tried one bite of crust. Well, when chewed to mush, that crust tasted awful. So instead of wishing/wanting to eat the whole slice, I was perfectly content with the toppings. And since I ate the toppings, thought they were good, but not "oh my gosh, I want PIZZA!" type good, I'm fine NOT eating them again for quite a while. Moderation.

It's all about knowing yourself. If the strictness is what you need to stay on course, then be strict. If moderation is best for you in the long run, then make conscious, honest decisions about what you're going to eat.

As for the chewing and spitting it out...nope, not for me. I had LapBand surgery, and now VSG, to be as normal as possible. I honestly don't feel that chewing up food and spitting it out (unless it tastes horrible! LOL) is "normal." But then, neither is living on liquids for 2 weeks, but why do 2 abnormal things if you can stay with just 1? ;)

Ok so how about something less scientific?

First' date=' this behavior is the first steps of bulemia and getting into the habit of chewing food and spitting it out can lead to a very serious eating disorder. After WLS we are already dealing with changing the way we relate to food, so we want to instill good habits all along the way and avoid the bad ones as much as possible.

Second, there's a biological reason not to do this too. When you smell food and when it enters your mouth and you begin to chew, the body goes into Prep Mode to receive food. Your salivary glands produce saliva, your pancreas produces insulin, your liver produces gastric acid and your brain begins to calculate how much nutrition you're about to receive from the food you eat so it can keep track of it's daily needs/calories --- the body is a well tuned machine and it knows how to deal with food when it knows it's coming. But then you spit out the food. Your body still has excess saliva, insulin, gastric acid and it can't figure out why it didn't get the nutrition it thought it was going to get so the brain accountants go nuts.

Excess insulin in your body causes your appetite to increase so you'll eat more food to soak up all that extra hormone. Excess gastric acid in the stomach -- now released at the Y of your common channel -- can cause indigestion or heartburn or ulcers. And those brain accountants are now doing some creative math to recalculate the nutritional value of food because it thought it was going to get a certain number of calories, but none came, so next time you try to eat that same food the brain thinks you need twice as much to get the same nutrition as it thought it should have gotten last time.

So not only is the whole "chew and spit" habit a training ground for bulemia, it's also a way to tease your body into thinking it's getting food when it really isn't. Bulemia is a very serious illness and not something you want to play around with.

Again, Laura-ven... I believe you are really overreacting to this. But, ever since being on this website I have noticed that is very common. Funny to.me how people who let themselves become so obese that they have to have a surgical procedure to correct it are now nutrition police and know it alls. At the end of the day, people who have this surgery screw up in one way or another at some point. I guess it is not such a big deal when they do it, but when someone else does it is made to be such a huge deal. Anyway, if someone wants to chew on something while on the liquid phase, have at it. It isnt going to kill you & it isnt going to make you lose less weight. I see people on here that chew gum, but I was told that is one of the most dangerous things you could do, if swallowed. I could care less what any of you do, honestly.

Its a dumb idea, and nasty. If that's something that you can sign on to, fine, but it isn't appropriate to bag on others that aren't high fiving the idea.

Johnlatte- I have no interest in chewing food & spitting it out. I will however, stand up for those that do and everyone else that makes mistakes. I have done everything that I have been told thus far, but I am only 11 days post op and who is to say I will never make a mistake? Everyone does at some point. If I can't voice my opinion just like everyone else does, then why be on this website? It was far from a personal attack because I am not the one chewing food and spitting it out. I have the right to reply to any post on this website just like everyone else. Thank you ;-)

Wow didn't realize I started a controversy! I follow my diet to a t but on 2 occasions I did take a bite and spit it out. When I thought about a second bite realized I wasn't missing anything. But how sad for ppl to come on her and criticize each other. If you have the perfect will power then why are u here? Why are u in the same situation? Everyone is different and may not be the super hero u think u are. Please think before u speak. I know its asking a lot!

I appreciate your opinion myst, others seem to be very passionate about theirs. I have first hand experienced a friend that is battling with food issues and depression because of. They do not want to screw up and its effecting them severely. I on the other hand am sailing thru this and its a comfortable change. I just don't want others to walk away feeling less if they choose to handle it differently. If someone picks up the habbit of anorexia or bulimia then there probably others things going on that led to it. Its hard to quite cold turkey. I needed it to just get show me I didn't need that cheesebuger. So it served its purpose. Baby steps is all I'm saying!

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
