Day 3 Post Op- Can I have Protein Shakes?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 days post, sleeved on Friday, 24th and I'm on Clear Liquids. In my handout from my Dr it had Protein Shakes on allowed liquids however my family keeps telling me its not right and I'm only suppose to be on clear liquids. I'm very very sore, can't get comfortable and feel hungry. Is this normal? I thought the feeling of hunger would go away. I have only been having Popsicles, ice chips, Water and crystal light. My though is that Protein shakes may make me feel full or atleast like I had substance.

Unless your family is your doctor I'd say go for the Protein shake maybe Water it down so it isn't as thick but if your doctor says its ok then listen to the doctor. My doctors documents say purees once I'm released from the hospital and that kind of scares me but they know best right? I hope recovery is going well I get sleeved tomorrow. Oh maybe to relax the family by having them contact the nurse line and that way they feel assured that its ok.

I would definitely go by your surgeon's handout, not your family's advice (I'm sure they mean well, but they aren't medical professionals). I started Protein Shakes the day after I got home from the hospital (I was discharged in the evening), which was 3 days post-op. My surgeon emphasizes the importance of Protein during the first 2 weeks, for healing and to prevent Hair loss later on (you lose hair about 3 months after the precipitating event). If it makes you feel better, you could try clear liquid Protein Drinks, like mixing whey powder in with crystal lite. I found with the premade non-clear shakes like Muscle Milk lite that I did better if I thinned them out with some almond milk. Even though ultimately I ended up drinking more volume over a longer period of time, they were much easier to get down and more palatable. Do you have a dietitian? I would follow his/her advice too. Good luck!

All doctors have different timeframes and guidelines. This is a question for your surgeon, not the general public. If YOUR paperwork says Protein Shakes, then you should be having Protein shakes. Protein promotes healing! Call your doctor.

Depends on the diet your doctor specifies, ask him/her?

I know for 1 week after my surgery I cannot have anything but clear liquids (clear liquids are not most Protein shakes) however you CAN buy Isopure which is a clear liquid form for a Protein shake (40g protein). Good luck!

There are a few clear liquid Proteins out you can try. Sunkist makes some in fruit punch and orange and grape. They have 24 grams of Protein in only 2.5oz bottles. Then they have New Whey comes in grape, green apple, orange watermelon and I think fruit punch it has 42 grams total.

My nutritionist also recommend ensure clear. Not as much Protein as some but easy to find. I got the peach and it was palatable over ice. I also use the shots, I think I found both at Walmart.

How long are you suppose to be on Clear Liquids?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
