when was it safe for you to exercise again?

Recommended Posts

My doctor told me a month but I feel like I am progressing faster than i thought i would..dont really have any pain in my stomach and just slept the entire night on it without any pain getting up or down. I did about an hour of walking yesterday. I'm only 4 days post op so I'm not suggesting working out now but was anyone cleared at their 2 week appt? Also I am not supppsed to lift over 10lbs, would I be okay with a 5 lb weight?

Exercise makes me feel happy.

My doctor said I could start to exercise as soon as I felt up to it. However I don't think I am supposed to lift.

You should always do what your surgeon says. No one is alike and all surgeons are different with their requirements and timeframes. You chose your surgeon for a reason, trust what he is telling you.

Didnt choose him. My insurance is through Yale because my mom works there and had to get it done at yale. I was just curious if others had gotten clearance earlier like at their 2 week followup.

I was cleared at 2 weeks for regular exercise. Although i felt great otherwise, my first exercise was my old zumba class, and after 15 minutes i started feeling discomfort and slight pain, so i stopped. I did the elliptical after that and felt no pain or discomfort. I've always been very active, so i didn't think I'd have a problem with any exercises, especially since i had virtually no pain in my normal day-to-day. So, once you're cleared, just listen to your body. And good luck!

I guess I assumed that you trusted this person enough to cut out more than half of one of your major organs, so I would think you would trust that whatever guidelines they give you are best for you. Obviously you are going to do whatever you want anyway. Good luck.

I am listening to my surgeon. I am not doing whatever I want. Honestly I would trust any surgeon who has a specialty in bariatric surgery. I was asking because I wanted to know if there was any hope for the future. I have a two week followup in little less than 2 weeks and am not going to exercise until then but wondering if it was possible to get the okay by then...I dont want to get my hopes up.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
