Did anyone smoke after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I never thought I would be able to quit...I had tried everything and it didn't help that my husband was a smoker. My doctor wouldn't do surgery unless I passed a nicotine test, though. I finally tried Chantix and it really worked, even though I had to stop early due to nausea. I restarted several times at only one pill a day when I felt myself slipping....

I really wasn't sure if I would be able to stick to it after surgery, but when my recovery was so awful it put the fear of God into me (at one point it looked like I might lose my entire stomach) I realized that the danger of getting a serious ulcer was very real due to smoking. This could land me on TPN with a PICC line again (and I'm still not off of it as part of my recovery!). This awareness killed any temptation to smoke again, so I suppose I should be thankful.

To some posters, though, I'd encourage some compassion for smokers. Realize that non obese people view the obese as harshly as many do smokers. Just remember that there is a lot of naturally occurring pain in the world without adding to it. :) There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself from second hand smoke, either.

Yeah can't say no offense and then call people dumb.

Good thing I'm not dumb enough (no offense) to misspell a vast majority of my post while calling people dumb.

Yes but she was talking in her earlier comment about her experience so I was assuming her experience...my surgeon gives nicotine tests too. So would you guys quit if you became pregnant? I'm not a smoker but I dont get how someone can quit for 9 months and then just go back to that bad habit

No not you

Ok ladies enough! This post is not for name calling or belittling each other! If you smoke fine thats your perogative and if you don't then it's your's! Get this post back to what the OP wanted to know. If you don't smoke don't comment unless it's to offer support on how to stop smoking without being negative about it.

Oh and smoking and doctors??

Doctors are people... They have different theories and opinions on everything especially this surgery! Some probably test for nicotine if they think you smoke, some can probably give a rats ass if you do! And the ones that "let" you smoke?

Is it because they think it causes no harm? Or is it because really they just don't care?

Wow, no need to be so nasty and enuff is only one letter away from enough so you might as well just look smarter and not try to shorten things up!

I quit smoking 1 month before surgery and I am now 5 months post op and continue to be smoke free! I feel so much better without the smokes but it is definitely difficult to quit!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
