How long was your pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

I meet my surgeon again today and if BCBS plays nice next month I will be scheduled for my surgery. I asked him about the pre-op diet and he said Clear Liquids for 2 days prior!!! I about fell out! Really?! Just two days!!

I had a 2 week diet but cheated everyday... Not proud of the fact but my surgery went perfectly. Almost 4 months out with no issues. You should be happy that you only got 2 days. I have heard of a few surgeons that require no preop diet.

Mine was one week - Protein Shakes, Jello, broth, and sugar free popsicles. Not terribly bad since I have experience with liquid diets (Medifast). Every doctor is different.

3 weeks but its a "very low calorie diet" that basically consist of 1,000 calories, 80 grams of Protein and 64 oz of Water. It might sound easy but I'm on day one and I'm hungry!!

Have to get Optifast from a doctor, but you can check our Unjury, which my NUT suggested. Can get only from the website, but they ship fast and I like all the flavors.

I didn't have to do any pre-op diet when I had my band fitted or when I was sleeved, not sure if they do things differently over here.

This is my two week pre-op diet:

Breakfast: One shake.

Lunch: One shake and one small piece of fruit.< /span>

Snack: 6-8oz non fat greek yogurt or 1/2 cup FF cottage cheese.

Dinner: 4oz lean meat and unlimited non-starchy veggies.

Snack: 1/2 cup veggies.

I can have unlimited veggies all day as well as needed.

I started two weeks earlier than I needed to so that I could ease into it and it's really not been that bad. I have "cheated" on my heavy activity days with 2-3 oz of extra lean Protein in the form of tuna, chicken, Beans or almonds which was OKd my by NUT. I do Martial Arts, so when I do a two or three hour "boot camp", I'm in a serious bad way on 400 calories so I add a bit.

You can do it!

2 weeks of full liquids (shakes) totally 800-1000 calories a day. That was by far the hardest - much worse than the post op diet for me.

What kind of shakes do you use?

I truly like the EAS Carb Advantage in Rich Dark chocolate. My NUT is not thrilled as they don't meet the caloric or carb requirements (too low). I add 1/3 cup dried nonfat milk and that gets the calories where she wants them but not the carbs and I call that good enough. In the blender with 1 cup of ice and they are actually really good. I've been adding my fruit to the blender at lunch (usually half a banana) and they are FANTASTIC.

Do you feel hungry all the time drinking them? That's what I'm worried about. Being very hungry and eating while drinking a shake :-/ and gaining more weight. I hope that makes sense....

It absolutely makes sense. :)

I eased my body into the diet by starting with one shake for Breakfast, a no/low carb high Protein lunch (think chicken on a salad) and a no/low carb dinner. I had a few Snacks in between, like veggies and yogurt.

Then, after about a week of that, I alternated days of 1 shake with the above, and then two shakes with the third meal being no/low carb and high Protein. I did this for about a week and a half.

Now that I am on two shakes a day daily, it's fairly easy. I do get hungry, but I have lots of red peppers precut and FF greek yogurt dip. It's not fun, but I know this will make for the healthiest surgery plus I am down almost 18 pounds in three weeks. I've lost a size and a half and I am thrilled that I am off to a great start!

I drink the Atkins Advantage shakes and they are pretty good! I usually sit them in the freezer for a few minutes before drinking. I've lost 4.1lbs so far. I also drink hot tea when I get hungry or I chew flavored gum-strawberry shortcake is the best!

NEVER LET YESTERDAY USE UP TO MUCH OF TODAY! BE BLESSED

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
