What did it feel like when you woke up from surgery?

Recommended Posts

Very sleepy and drugged. I had a hard time waking up. I wasn't in a lot of pain. I had some nagging left side aching pain. I still have it a little over a week out.

I woke up on the operating table dry heaving. I had nausea something terrible. I then started my journey of puking and walking. I was on morphine but refused it after the first day. I was wanting to leave but I had a 4 day stay because of severe stomach pains.

I woke up dazed and confused, ha not the first time I've experienced that, only never in a surgery room before at least. Once I got my bearings I was good. My BP was spiking very high so they kept me in recovery for a few extra hours, but once it was lower, like none instant death area, all was well. Very little pain throughout my entire healing and post op.

I woke up and looked around to make sure where i was and decided I was still sleepy so I went back to sleep. Woke up the 2nd time and needed to use the restroom so I got up and went. I felt good so I walked around and talked to the other ladies that were still waiting for surgery. Did this for a couple hours until I was tired then took a nap. No nausea, no pain, and no issues.

I'm preparing myself for the worst, so nope! I've had my gallbladder out so I'm imagining it'll be similar but with a bit more pain. I'm 23 and healthy other than my weight so I'm hoping for the best :)

It was extremely similiar to gallbladder surgery for me. Except i had more gas pain and discomfort with gallbladder surgery. the muscles in your stomache feel sore like too many situps you will avoid coughing and sneezing for a week. lol. hugging a pillow when you need to cough or sneeze will help. they did a great job managing my pain but i was only on pain meds for 24 hours. walk, walk, walk, If you breezed through gallbladder surgery you will be FINE!

I woke up to an older guy next to me screaming about I don't know what. Then I was in and out of it for the rest of the day. As for pain they drugged me up good on that first day I was sleeved on the 25th of march. Day two sucked but I've lost 30lbs so I'd do it over in a heart beat. Good luck :-)

For me, it was like I'd done 5,000 sit-ups the day before. The pain when I woke up in recovery was pretty intense. I was in and out of it for a few hours. By the time I was coherent that afternoon, the pain was much more manageable and really didn't go over pain level 2 on a 10 scale. I'm 9 days post op and feel about 95% now. I've been very lucky.

My surgery was this past Thursday, April 11th and when I woke up I felt soreness, gas pain and nausea, but that was about it. All those feelings were managed with medication and there were no complications. Thank God.

For me, after I got me parked in my room, the nurses told me what to expect for the next 3-5 hours. They told me they would be in every 30 minutes to check on me and every hour to take my vitals. They would try not to disturb me but at the 3 hour mark they would come and wake me and ask me if I could get up and pee and walk. If not, they would be in to ask every hour thereafter. They made sure I understood that I had the moriphine (sp?) pump in my hand. I slept for 3 hours, did not push the pump, they told me. After that they helped me get up and I did not get back in the bed until I went to sleep for the night. I sat in a very, very comfortable chair all afternoon and evening while my hubby sat on the couch. Every hour on the hour I got up walked several laps around the nurses station and was cheered on by the incredibly supportive staff. I did push the pain pump about 5 minutes before I got up, mostly a preventative measure, much like the nausea meds every 4 hours. I stayed ahead of the pain and nausea for the first 48 hours.

I slept that night and went home by 9am the next morning. The nurses told me because I walked so much and was able to stay on the liquid schedule without nausea, it probably made the difference in my feeling so well the next morning. I was scheduled to stay two nights but really did not need to so I went home and had the best nap.

My advice is don't be a martyr. The nurses told me my surgeon left orders for several different pain and nausea meds so just ask. The drugs are there for a reason. Stay ahead of the pain and nausea and you have the best chance of bouncing back quickly. I realize some people don't do well with some of the nausea meds but if they can work for you, you will be in great shape!

Good luck to you! You will do great!

I woke up w/ no pain. A little pressure under the diaphram from gas but no pain. My biggest issue was nausea from the anesthesia..once I got through that I was munching ice chips, walking all over the place and sleeping. By day 3, I was exploring Mexico :)

I woke feeling terrible gas pain. That hurt, but it's manageable.

As noted above, the leg massagers are awesome, and by day 4 I had turned a corner. A week out, I was back to work (I'm a teacher). I just told the kids I'm gonna sit most of today, so just listen to what I say.

I was in a lot of pain from day 1 to 4, but after that, back to normal!

Good luck!

I had a pretty rough recovery in the immediate post op period. They kept me in recovery room for 5 hours trying to manage pain. I don't think my stomach ever hurt at all, but the gas pain was the worst pain I've ever had. I had 3 C-sections and breezed through them, and figured this would be comparable. As far as incisional pain, it was easier, but the gas gave my terrible chest pain. My blood pressure was high and my blood sugar was high, even though I don't (and didn't) have those problems. Once I was stabilized and taken to my room, I rapidly improved. By that night, I was walking the halls without difficulty. So, it was about 6 or 7 hours of misery, but pretty tolerable after that for me.

I was super queezy to my stomach & they say I vomited, but I don't remember. They pumped me with meds asap & all was well. :D I actually rested soooo well in the hospital. My incisions were sore but only one really bothered me. It wasn't very bad & they all healed properly.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
