Can't get enough protein

Recommended Posts

I am almost 2 weeks post op. scale says I'm down 20lbs. But I just can't get the Protein in. Today I drank two 20oz of Water and that's it. It's not that I'm nauseated its just that I'm not hungry. I feel like a whole Protein Shake is just too much. Does anyone know if I don't get enough protein will I continue to loose weight? Tomorrow I'm gonna to try really hard to get some protein in.

yes you will continue to lose weight even if you don't get your Protein in.. Unfortunately if you continue to skimp on the protein you'll also lose muscle mass.. and hair... and you'll heal slower.

Do your best. Don't expect to be perfect. Some people find that the "fruity" thin Protein Drinks go down better than the heavy milk based ones. I like to mix jay robb tropical dreamcicle flavor with a diet drink like Vitamin Water and it doesn't give you that heavy feeling. other people say the Isopure alpine punch tastes good when mixed with water.. like drinking Hawaiian punch.. but I haven't tried that one.

I'm having my surgery on the 20th. I'm hating the Protein drinks and to be honest I would rather feel like I'm starving than drink another shake. I can't even look at the bottles in the fridge! I will have to try some of the other styles I guess. Thanks for the info!

You need the Protein Shakes especially in the first weeks. They help with the weight loss and the healing that you need to do.. You just have to do it... Simple as that. Consider it necessary medicine that is non negotiable.

you risk losing more muscle mass if you don't get in your Protein because your body will break down your muscle to use for energy. Granted with the massive amounts of weight that we lose with the sleeve it is very difficult to not lose ANY muscle mass, but getting in your protein will decrease the amount you lose. Muscle mass needs to be maintained because it burns more calories than fat. Losing 50 pounds is great, but if 25 pounds of that is muscle...no bueno.

How much Protein are you actually getting in right now? You are tracking the grams, right?

You might try unflavored Protein powder in broth, if something thin is easier to get down. Perhaps thin your ready-to-drink shakes with skim milk and divide them into smaller portions - at this stage while it is probably best to be following a schedule, you may find it less intimidating to face a 4 oz shake with less heaviness every 20 minutes or so rather than a full 8 oz of thick shake.< /p>

All of this said, a lot of people struggle with the Protein the first couple of weeks - keep trying to get more in each day until you get to the correct amount and you'll be okay.

Good luck!

I used syntax nectar drinks and mix them with Water. I love the latte Cappuccino, fuzzy naval, strawberry kiwi, crystal sky. There are tons of flavors and I mix them with 16 oz of water. They way you get your water and your Protein in at the same time. I too could not hardly look at another Protein Shake. But some other options are, use an ice cream maker and pour your shake made with skim, soy, almond or your choice of milk into it and turn it into ice cream. Sometimes the change helps. It turns out really good. But you can also make your current shakes with water instead of milk too to thin them out. It is very important early on to get this protein in. You will start to feel much better once you do as well. I wasn't hungry at the early stages but I forced myself to drink it and after a few times of doing that you will become a pro. You can do it!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
