Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Thanks Brandy - I'm feeling better about Huskers all the time. But that's OK if you're not real fond of Sooners. I'm used to it.

Congratulations on all your weight loss success. You have done fantastic. I think it would be really hard to keep working when everyone thinks you look good but you would like to lose more.

Dee - the Huskers have struggled with football since Tom Osborn left. He was a great man and coach. I was at OU in the 70's when they were national champions twice (yes I'm really that old). I was treating patients on the geriatric psyc ward this morning and one guy said he hadn't seen me since Woodstock. Well, I wasn't at Woodstock and was not old enough to go but it was funny. For some reason having a patient who is old enough to be my dad and has psyc issues flirting with me isn't what I had hoped for when I began losing weight.

Hello all. I am new. I have been doing research and have found out about Dr. K. I have learned alot just by listening to all of you.

I went to his website and put in my information. I plan to call on Monday because I don't know if I can wait form them to call me. Besides it sounds like his office is BUSY!

Here is my quesion for all of you. I am about 8 hrs away and plan to drive or be driven. How soon were you able do the phone pro-op and schedule surgery? Do you know how far out he is booked up?

I have spent my time learning and asking questions. Now I am ready to begin the rest of my life and work at losing the weight and for a change keeping it off.

Thanks,

Julie Ann in Kansas

Congrats on picking a great doc, Julie Ann. Dr. K is usually booked out 6 weeks or so in advance. So, you could be banded in late Oct. or early Nov. I'll bet! Welcome to the gang.

Hello...

I finally decided to stop reading post and read Dr. K's website - picked up the phone and talked with his office staff (VERY NICE & INFORMATIVE). I just called last week and was given my date of 10/30. I believe this time will fly by and I'll be banded in no time! I received a ton of info from Natalie [his bariatric coordinator], as soon as I was set with financing, etc. She sent me everything I needed to know to get started. I got my pre-op consult w/Dr. K via phone on 10/6 and will arrive there 10/29 to meet with him at 3pm and surgery the next day at 1pm. DH & I plan to be there for 2 nights. We are flying in and staying at a local hotel (they provide you with many choices at a medical rate). Everyone on this website have provided me with a whole lot of information to help me with this decision and I plan to continue to return for ongoing support.

Good Luck

We have converted my daughters (3 of them) spouses into Husker fans too. Some converts are harder than others, especially after the last several years we've had, but every dog has its day, and it just wasn't ours. Sooners have always been out biggest rival and now they are doing great. So good luck and keep it up, go big red, no matter what shade.

Congrats on your dates, I know you will love Dr. K., do you know which hospital you will be at yet? I was at Parker Adventist, it is fantastic, the nurses were the best.

Thank you. Its been tough, I have had three fills to date, but am still having a hard time with being hungry most of the time. I'm eating the Proteins first but for some reason I am hungry within a couple of hours, I've been told I just need another fill, I go for that in a couple of weeks.

That is the same location I went to, close to my house. As I said you will like it there, the facilities are fairly new and the staff are extremely nice and helpful. Good luck, keep us informed

I was at UNL during the Osborn era! He was a great man and coach! I agree!

Aren't psyc patients a kick? One told me once that I had missed my calling in life -- she felt I should have been a "belly dancer" -- this mind you, was mentioned during group! I was pretty embarrassed and figured she must have been on some heavy duty drugs! That or she was blind!

Thanks for the answers. Could you tell me about the pre-op/post-op diet? Each doctor seems to be different.

I am planning on doing financing. I don't think that should be a problem. Does anyone have any advice to to or stay away from?

You guys are great! I put in an expected date because I already want to count down. I guess I'll refigure it when I have a set date!

The count down is so fun to me!

Have you had an opportunity to check on their website to see the type of financing they accept? Unless you plan to send them a personal check or using your VISA/MC. As soon as you get a date, they'll send you the info you need for a preop diet. I was told to do an Atkins-style preop - the length of time on this varies... you'll learn the length when you speak with nutritionist a few weeks before surgery.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
