Autoimmune Issues and VSG?

Recommended Posts

Did you check with the rheumatologist? I was told to not get back on them until the incisions had healed. He also said to check with the surgeon and see at what point the risk of infection was almost non-existent. The surgeon said to wait until 3 weeks after surgery to start them again. So worth checking with rheumy I'd say.

Yes it the rhemy doctor changing me to shots.... had sleeve 6/18, and my first flare up since i got off meds in may due to my surgery date changed to june....but i will double check with surgeon to be sure...thx...

Folic acid should be taken daily.

I'm getting ready to start the shots since sleeved now...can u tell me a little about How this is done...

The shot is a true blessing! Are you out far enough to start them? I have to wait 4 weeks after surgery to start back. However, since surgery I haven't been hurting as bad!

I have a question....did any of you have to go off of your prednisone before surgery? I am in the middle of a huge flare and really could use just a touch of pred to get me over it. I don't want to be as miserable as I am now going into my surgery. Any thoughts? Help!!

Check with your surgeon or arnp, mine said if I had a flare I could take them prior to- even the morning of surgery, luckily I did not need them

I do the methotrexate (mtx) injection once a week, along with my ENBREL injector pen, both go into my thighs since I can't do my stomach for now...my ENBREL just goes under the skin basically, whereas the mtx goes into the muscle.....I was taking 6 tablets of mtx, now I take an injection of 4 units (unit= tab). I no longer take my folic acid (for now) because my multi Vitamin contains it....my 3 mo lab work will determine whether I need more of anything.

My surgeon told me what I could take and when, my rheumy adjusted the dosages and changed my RX to injection versus tablets.....

Hope this helps!!! Brenda

I haven't taken anything in 3 weeks and I have not yet had any pain. I'm really surprised! Usually I can tell its shot day because I start to gently ache the previous day. Hoping this lasts for a while.

What about the rest of you?

I was feeling the lack of meds right up to my surgery. The funny thing is, I haven't felt that bad the past 5 days post op. the specialist I go to said that the surgery threw my body in shock. He wants me to get prepared in case I have a bad lupus attack or bad RA flare up.

I was having a moderate flare at the time of surgery, and was sleeved on August 6. As of right now, I have very little swelling in my "bad" hand, and no aches related to my psoriatic arthritis. So thankful! Im hoping this lasts, but I'm preparing for a flare in the weeks to come. I'll see my rheum after my 2 week follow up with my surgeon. I'm not sure when I will start back on my meds.

I am excited to see my "official" 2 week weight at my appointment next week!

This is a great question! I have Rheumatoid arthritis and was wondering how doing VSG was going to affect me. My Rheumatologist was against me having the surgery but I am going forward with it and am scheduled for September 11th. I also gained my weight from the medications I was put on and have not been able to lose it. I am so happy to see others that have RA and are having or have had the surgery. I am on Orencia and had my last infusion on July 31st.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
