Autoimmune Issues and VSG?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Well' date=' I have two, I have Lupus as well as Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome and I am scheduled to be sleeved the week of the 18th of October. My doctor said NO , NO NO to the Band not only because of risk of increased pain and infection, but within the past year they have removed 40 and put in zero. I was highly reccomened for the sleeve and took on getting it. They expect no complications. Not sure if that helped at all <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />[/quote']

What is the antibody syndrome? I'm sure getting weight off will help with all other problems. Let us know how you're doing after the surgery.

Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome is very close to Lupus, so having both is pretty rough but it's life. Very low immune system and hurts your bones. Got my official sleeve date today of October 9th!

Has anyone here with an autoimmune disorder looked toward diet to ease symptoms? Cutting edge discoveries (seriously like in just the last few months) are starting to link GI issues + autoimmune + neurological disorders. Something never paid attention to before is something called "Leaky Gut Syndrome", wherein Proteins leak into the blood stream, and the body attacks them, creating autoimmune issues. I am about to start on something called GI Protect, if anyone else has been on it or something similar, please pm me.

I eat Gluten free and I know that has positively affected auto-immune conditions that I was diagnosed with.

I spoke to my Rheumy and learned something interesting. I'd gone 6 weeks with mo meds and then had to re-start. He said that in my case, there was almost no chance of remission, because I test positive for both Anti-CCP as well as Rheumatoid factor. If you are seronegative however, he says he sees remission after weight loss in those cases all the time. So that seems to be the deciding factor as to whether or not RA benefits from surgery. OA will almost definitely benefit, and SA will highly likely benefit. Even in my case, the 30 less lbs have made a difference for symptoms and ability to exercise more. He also said that when I lose more, we can try to take me off the Enbrel and only do methotrexate and see If it will work on its own, which would make me happy.

I'm glad so got some information. Hope the MEDS go well and you can get off one. I saw my rheumy about fatigue. Some days I feel like I'm walking through Jello. Makes it hard to teach 4 year olds! He didn't think it was my fibro. He thought I was anemic from the wls or my thyroid was out if wack. He did blood tests and I'm not anemic but my thyroid came back at .25. I guess that means it's over active. Ill search tonight to study up on that. I don't think fatigue is a symptom of that so it may have been the fibro after all. He gave me nuvigil (sp) to increase my energy and I've taken it 4 times in the last 3 weeks. Seems to help. But I'm not happy about taking a stimulant in the am and a sleeping pill in the pm. Sounds too Hollywood. The ambien isn't really working anyway. I feel like I'm dreaming all night. The CPAP is working, but the dreams are nasty. Things like rape, murder, nuclear war, and last night aliens blew up the earth! Guess I need to change my TV habits!! 6 weeks ago I dreamt soundly all night. Seems to have changed since school started. Panic attacks have occurred once a month...waking me up. I have 2 1/2 more years and I'll be 65 so I hope to retire...if I have enough money. But enough of my update... Time to kick back and watch some TV...nightmares here I come!

Sorry. Ill bet it was important to you! I'm at the point where I'm having trouble working. It's like I have 100 pounds weights tied to my feet. Well see when the blood work comes back if its just anemia. I'm dought it , but could be wrong.

It was devastating....I was in tears in his office and after I left. I kind of knew it was coming, but I hated to see it happen. It's been about a year and a half now, and I know it was the right choice....but it still hits me hard lots of days...esp when my income could come in handy. Still waiting on approval of my disability.....

I can't seem to get on. Been wondering how everyone is doing. I was in a car accident Friday night. Not my fault. Was t/boned. Think my car may be totaled. The stress of everything has sent my fibro in a tail spin.

Can't believe I still hurt from the accident! Christmas wasn't as much fun as it usually is. I've eaten way too much. It's like a slap in the face. Thought I had everything under control now I'm kicking myself. I've frozen bags of trail mix, tiny whole wheat Bagels, wasa crackers, and other "carbs". I plan to eat one a weekend and then just Protein and veggies during the week. I'm hoping this will trick my body and get me losing again. Haven't lost anything since 10/27. Seems longer than that!! My dr said to stay under 100 gms carbs a day. But I think that's not helping my blood sugar. I gave away my candy and fruitcake to my family. Can't stand to have it around. Start physical therapy tues. I'm craving comfort foods because I hurt so much. Anyone have other ideas on how to get off carbs ?

I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This causes me pain each day, and makes exercise for weight loss (I have always had to do major workouts to lose consistently) very difficult. I have begun the process to be sleeved by September. Anyone else done this procedure with an autoimmune disease? How has it improved or worsened the symptoms?

My rheumatologist tells me that the weight loss will help the medications work better (at lower doses), and my surgeon says they deal with AI issues regularly. He did say he would not put in the band, because that can exacerbate symptoms.

Thanks in advance!

Tina

San Antonio, Texas

Just seeing this and yes I have them both...sleeved 6/18/13...hw 349...sw 301...today 214...im doing much better I had to go from the methatrate (sp)pills to a injection but was able to do Water excercise mostly at first and chair dancing but as the weight came off and I improve I can do more. ..yes lossing weight helps and some days I really hurt but at lease it some days that its really bad and not everyday like it use to be....

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
