Did anyone have to put on Xanax to be able to have the surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was scheduled to have my surgery on March 19 but unfortunately had to cancel due to a panic attack on the way to the hospital. I was given 15 tablets of Xanax to take from now until my new surgery date on April 1. Did anyone else have to be put on Xanax and did it help? Did it calm you down enough to be able to have it? I do not wanna chicken out again. I want the pills to work so I can get through this. I have just never had a major surgery before. I am so scared of chickening out again.

I requested ahead of time if I could take a Xanax on the morning of my surgery and the doctor said it was fine. It made me relaxed and everything went well!

I was not put on Xanax and was able to get it together by the time I got to be hospital, but while in the shower the morning of surgery, I had a panic attack that resulted in hyperventilation that I COULD NOT control, and then he eventually passing out. And I was NOT nervous up until that point! It's like it physiologically hit me so quickly and so hard that I was about to CHANGE THE REST OF MY LIFE in such a huge way. And I'm not usually one to have reactions like that to anything!!! It was so very overwhelming.

All I can offer you is the reassurance that it's normal and the advice to try to come to terms wih the change you're about to experience (IN IT ENORMOUS ENTIRETY) by the time your survey date comes. Maybe Ben it won't overwhelm you so much? I don't know. Info believe you can overcome it with some mental work. So sorry you're feelin like this.

I also asked if I could take a xanax the morning of surgery and they said it was perfectly fine. Im so glad I was able to because it took the edge off for me. Plus, while you are waiting to be wheeled in, they give you some of what I call 'calm down juice'. Its a shot they give you thru the IV to mellow you out even more. I was very excited for my surgery though. It was only till the day before that I started getting really anxious.

I did not have any prior to surgery but I was wishing I had some! I was a wreck! It was all for nothing though.

Quite honestly, I truly think that the worst part of the whole ENTIRE process is our anxiety prior to surgery. Our mind takes over and it stresses us so much! It's The relief of having it done is so great! Then you can look forward to the new you!

For me, I have been so much calmer and focused on recovering and looking forward to the rest of my life.

Good luck to you. You will rock it! There are so many people here that will talk you through the anxiety that we all felt prior to surgery.

Xanax is pretty strong stuff, I don't see how it could NOT help you. Be careful though, it can be addictive and some have "rebound" anxiety when they quit taking it. But just this short time on it shouldn't be a problem.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
