Question about dress sizes from a newbie

Recommended Posts

I will be having my sleeve surgery done the 3rd or 4th week of May and am standing up in my sister's wedding on October 12th. I have to order my dress for the wedding today and they told me that I could only alter it about 2 sizes down before it loses its shape. So, my question is, how much weight did you lose in about 4 months and appx. how many dress sizes was it for you? I know everyone loses weight differently, however, I'm trying to make an educated guess on how to order this dress. I've been told to order it a size or two down by some people and then have some more room for alterations if I lose more and then there's my mother in law who said she only lost 1 dress size after losing 80 lbs after her bypass!

Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

for me its every 12-15 pounds for one dress size. you will get a better idea once you start losing weight after surgery to guess how much you will be down for october. I would order it on the bigger side because its easier to take a dress in then add. I got sleeved 30/11/2012 and Im down 35 pounds since and 3 dress sizes down. Im down 8 pant sizes and 2 shirt sizes. hope this helps!! and good luck!!! :)

It depends on where you are on the sizing charts..

For instance if your mother in law where extremely obese and wearing... say a size 30? the weight loss would have to be significant to move to the next smaller size... If you are starting smaller it will take less weight to move to the small size

I went from a size 22 to a size 16 in 3 months. If you order a dress a size or two larger than what you think you'll be, then it can be fitted to your exact size prior to the wedding. HOw exciting that you will have your sister's wedding to flaunt your weight loss!!!

I think I'd shoot for the 16/18 as laura mentioned. I went from a size 18 to a 6 in 4 1/2 months but you have a bit more to goal than me. If you went with a 16 you'd have room to alter either way safely.

Or you can have one of my old dresses :P

jgarnick

its a guessing game :(

to be on the conservative side - you will "probably/maybe" lose anywhere from 35-45 lbs - maybe more

people often loose a bunch of weight at the very beginning

then it does slow down a bit

however much you loose.....

you will look terrific - belle of the ball :)

enjoy "strutting" your stuff at the wedding :)

good luck with WLS

speedy recovery :)

My stats are similar to yours, so maybe this would help. DOS weight 255, size 22/24 dress. By 2/11, my 4 month anniversary, I was down to 199 (-56 lbs.) and wearing a size 14/16 dress. I am not too busty, so I would def. take that into consideration, as far as ordering the 16/18 goes. I guess you should be safer with the 16/18, then have it altered. It will depend on how much you take off. I would think you have a terrific incentive to really lose during the "honeymoon"! Good luck! Post a photo so we can see how gorgeous you looked! :)

You have to remember Formal dress sizes are different... I litterally just ordered my Maid of Honor dress for my sister's wedding this past Tuesday. I only needed to lose about a inch to fit in a size 18... My regular sizes are 16 pants xL top 16 dress... We ordered the size 18 and the seamstress told me most dresses can be altered 2-3 sizes down and for formal wear a size down is approx 20-25lbs...

I have about the same stats as you. I am 5' 5.5" I weighed 258lbs my DOS(12/12/12) I am not 219... My sisters wedding is May 25th and I am hoping to lose another 20-25lbs before then but I dont know so I ordered this one to be cautious...

Is this a special order dress? I am asking bc the lady at David's Bridal told me if I ordered Tues the latest it would be in would be 4 weeks... Then I would get sized by the seamstress at the begining of may to have my dress done for the wedding on May 25. You said your sister's wedding is in Oct right? Why are you ordering dresses now?

Check with the store you are buying your dress from... They were so helpful and have already helped plenty of people with my situation... The girls that helped me were so knowlegable and I waited to order my dress, I am sure the store can accomodate you!

Remember that bridal sizes run smaller.

Well, I went in and asked them and the seamstress told me to go down 2 sizes and worst case scenario is that if it didn't fit, then I could rush order some extra material in for them to fix it. I would hope that I'm down 2 sizes from now at that point though. The reason we had to order now is because it's a special order dress that takes 4 months to come in.

Sorry I just read the first couple sentences and went OMG! I'm in my best friend's wedding party on Oct 12, and am getting sleeved March 13. Haha I basically guessed my dress size, and my mom is going to help with alterations when the time comes. Good luck! I'll be with ya on Oct 12 :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
