How to Deal With Water Retention: Part One

In an ideal world, weight loss would be perfectly linear.

You'd lose weight in a predictable manner, seeing small but consistent changes each passing day. But this is rarely the case, which my experience has proven me many times over.

If you've ever been on a diet and tracked your progress with the scale or the mirror, you're probably familiar with water retention and long weight loss plateaus. Even though your diet is on point, nothing seems to be happening.

Stalling at the same scale weight for weeks is not unheard of - I've experienced it myself. Fortunately, these phases are followed by rapid weight loss seemingly over night. This delayed weight loss is often referred to as the "whoosh"-effect. Nothing for weeks...and then whoosh, 2-4 lbs lost over night. What triggers a whoosh? No one knows, but Lyle McDonald offered a hypothesisbased on something his old exercise physiology professor said.

So what's the big deal here? The issue with water retention is the frustration it brings while waiting for the whoosh.

Waking up every morning to see no progress on the scale can have profound effects on your motivation to maintain your diet and training regimen. Why put in all this effort when nothing is happening? Doubt creeps up. Maybe you're eating too much? Maybe you're not doing enough cardio, maybe your carb intake is too high? So you cut calories and increase cardio in the hopes that it will get the scale moving down again. If we're talking water retention (and not an actual stall), this has the potential to actually worsen the situation. Dumbfounded you watch as your weight creeps up even higher despite your ambitious attempts to set things right.

So at times like these, it's no wonder that people are likely to say "screw this ****" and go off their diet for a day. Or two. Or a week. In the worst case it triggers a binge that sets them back several days or weeks. Not good.

Given the negative impact of water retention on your morale, knowing the causes for water retention, and how to deal with it, can be very useful when you find yourself in this situation.

Water retention - what is it?

Water retention (or edema which is the term used by the medical establishment) is a common, concrete phenomenon that occurs during calorie restriction. It's not just some trivial vanity issue unique to the fitness crowd.

The magnitude of water retention varies; most often it's mild, but enough to obscure your fat loss results on a short-term basis. Sometimes it's more prominent, giving you the impression that nothing is happening for weeks. More severe types of water retention are a common characteristic of malnutrition and life-threatening starvation; it can be so extreme that people will appear to lose no weight at all, as greater amounts of fluids accumulate under the skin. Jewish doctors often observed this phenomenon in the Warsaw ghettos during World War 2.

Water retention can take many forms, such as swollen watery tissue or as an accumulation of fluids in the stomach, chest, lower body and in between joints. You might notice it in the form of fat that feels "squishy" or in the form of red strech marks when waking up in the morning. You can also notice it on your ankles when taking your socks off in the evening; the pressure from the socks leaves an indentation, which might be barely noticeable (no water retention) or big enough to fit half of your thumb in (an extreme example as told to me by a competitor after three days of post-competition binging and gaining 35 lbs). The latter is called pitting edema.

During starvation, inadequate nutrition depresses the pumping mechanisms within the cell that keeps excess salt and water out. The cell deteriorates and the distinction between in and out is lost. However, for the average Joe out there, water retention is more often related to daily shifts in water and salt intake.

Lessons from The Minnesota Experiment

In the Minnesota Experiment during World War 2, men willingly embarked on a semi-starvation-like regimen designed by Dr Ancel Keys. Yes, that's the same Keys who "discovered" a connection between saturated fat and cardiovascular disease - a controversial figure. But I digress. The objective of this study was to observe the effects of semi-starvation and to establish guidelines for properly refeeding war prisoners (this is critical, since refeeding victims of starvation can lead to cardiac arrest due to massive mineral and electrolyte fluctuations). A lot can be written about this fascinating experiment, but at this point I want to highlight some curious happenings related to the topic at hand. First of all, this wasn't quite starvation per se. The men were getting 1500-1800 kcal per day, while engaging in moderate amounts of daily activity, and that's not too far off from the usual diet fare today. The main difference being that this was done in a controlled setting lasting six months, which is longer than most people would endure a dieting stint.

At the start of the study, the men were losing weight linearly, dropping about 2 lbs per week. However, after some time the weight loss became erratic and unpredictable. No longer was it linear, but rather it occurred in "bursts" with long periods of plateaus. The researchers overseeing the experiment noted that water retention was noticeable in most men and in some cases quite severe.

Half-way through the study the men were allowed a relief dinner to Celebrate their progress. One big meal of 2300 kcal was served; roasted chicken, potatoes, gravy and strawberry shortcake. That night everyone got up more often than usual to urinate. The next day they discovered that they had each lost several pounds.

This was not a one-time occurrence. When the experiment was over and the refeeding phase began, the men continued to drop weight at an accelerated rate until calories were increased substantially.

What I want you to take away from this is the following:

* Refeeding can cause rapid weight loss, a whoosh. This seems counter intuitive, but it's a phenomenon observed in the scientific literature and retold by many dieters. My clients experience this, and so do people embarking on diet regimens where planned carb refeeds are integral parts of the plan (for example, The Ultimate Diet 2.0).

* In my experience, the more severe and rigorous the diet, the higher the likelihood of retaining water. In simple terms, higher calorie deficits usually result in more erratic, non-linear weight loss. This is not a proven fact, but rather a hypothesis based on what I have observed throughout the years - and it has some backing if we look at the weight loss curve observed in starvation and studies like The Minnesota Experiment.

* The hypothesis has credibility if we look at the hormonal response to starvation diets. "Starvation diets" in this context simply mean any diet approach that results in a very high weekly caloric deficit created through diet and/or exercise. This is perceived as a significant stress to the body, to which it responds with chronically raised levels of cortisol. Some cortisol is great, but too much of it is very bad; and studies suggest that cortisol increases in a dose-dependent manner related to the calorie deficit. Prolonged elevations of cortisol can lead to massive water retention. If you've ever been treated with hydrocortisone, a pharmaceutical form of cortisol, you know what I mean.

* The above makes me wonder if the myth of "starvation mode" is actually perpetuated by extreme dieters who find themselves not losing any weight on starvation-level caloric intake (due to severe water retention obscuring weight loss). While some metabolic slowdown occurs during any diet, it's never so profound that it completely negates a substantial calorie deficit. For example, during The Minnesota Experiment the researchers noted a 15-20% reduction in basal metabolic rate at the end of the study (it was actually 40% compared to the start of the study, but this was due to a higher body weight; a large percentage of the drop could be explained by the simple fact that they weighed less and not due to any hormonal impact).

Now you know a little bit about the erratic nature of water retention and the impact it can have on your body weight and diet adherence. In part two I will get a little more practical and tell you about some effective strategies that can help you deal with it if it rears it's ugly head.

This is EXACTLY the kind of information I was in need of, thank you!! I am going to cut out salt/sodium, drink a $h!t ton of water and eat my carbs after my work out and see what happens :)

I just want to let everyone know, if you follow this advice, it works!! I'm already down 5 pounds in 3 days since starting this. And I am at TOM.

what exactly did you do?

Lyle McDonald has several great books out regarding refeeds and carb cycling. I've worked with him a few times and made great gains and lost a good amount of weight. I'm anxious to get back on normal foods to start running through his programs again. Most carb refeeds you see these days are branched off of what he started.

I'm truly interested in the carb "refeed" thingy. I'm freaked totally out about carbs because all the surgeon, nut, etc tell you is no/low carb. I went on a carb binge for a few months and regained about 13 lbs. Now low carbing and NOT losing much so interested in HOW I should and WHAT i should do to "reset" or something to that effect. Because low carb is not producing much weight loss and I'm sure a lot is the amount of sodium that I am imbibing through processed foods (meats etc) Anybody else out there have info on how to really do it right?

I eat less than 50 carbs on regular days. Then on refeed day, I will go to the gym & do 4 sets of 15 reps per body part & increase my carbs on that day to 100. This refeeds the glycogen stores that I deplete when I hit the gym hard. It helps prevent me from puffing up with Water gain.

Question....

I have been experimenting with carb loading the day of cross fit because I know the WOD will deplete the glycogen levels. Not sure how much to do yet. I think my current experimentation puts the carbs around 50. I eat some energy squares in the morning and then a amrap bar (about 17 carb of raw honey) after the cross fit.

However, my big question is should I do this also on the days when I am running a 10 k? Running a 10 k is not as challenging (to me) as a Crossfit WOD (HIIT for 30 min) and lifting, but I can see how running for an hour will also deplete glycogen stores.

A little confused about this. Should I be eating more carbs every day aim exercising because the glycogen stores essentially get depleted daily? Note I also take pre workout drinks and creatine to help with opening up the muscles before, during and after a workout for oxygen, nutrients and water.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I am not a big runner but my understanding is that many runners do carb load on days they run.

Cool-thx. I always like the articles on live strong.com. OK, the articles says men should eat 3200 calories a day or their performance will be limited. It is also saying I need to eat approximately 800 carb a day for my weight ( did the calc quickly in my head). That is going to be darn difficult!! I am trying just to break 1500 calories and 50 carb a day in healthy food. Maybe I need to go find a personal dietician who can help with this (different from my WLS NUT because frankly I do not think she would approve).

I would definitely get advice from the NUT cause these numbers are for "normal" people & my understanding is that because we have been overweight, our bodies do not & cannot function at the levels people who have never been fat do.

Hey fiddle...I will say and days before my long run, I do carb load. Yes, I make them healthy carbs. The body really needs them when going for distance. You're doing cross fit and running so you're burning some serious calories, muscle is burning a ton when youre at rest, so they are not going to mess with you too much, if at all. (If I remember correctly, you're at maintenance or close to, right?)

For example, I will eat a few more carbs at lunch and dinner the day before. I split them up because obviously, my sleeve doesn't allow for bigger portions. The day of, for Breakfast I will throw a handful of uncooked oats in with my Protein shake, about 1 1/2-2 hours before the run.

Everyone is different, but hopefully it gives a different view and you can take what you need and throw out the rest. :)

Today I am a bloated sausage! My puffy little fingers can barely type, every piece of clothing that touches my skin feels like a sausage casing! And no, it isn't TOM. Yesterday I had some strawberries, a protein shake, soup chicken soup some baked chicken and half a protein bar.

Nice workout!

Perhaps you are not drinking enough to supports the needs of your WOD (workout of the day for other readers)? Also the air temperature and humidity may have caused you to lose more Water through sweating especially if the workout was pretty intense. Make sure you are staying well hydrated in order for your body to let go of some of the water at night while you are sleeping. Your body needs so much water to support each lb of lean muscle as the muscles are depleted of glycogen after a hard workout.

I am trying just to drink pretty much all the time I am not eating during my waking hours. Always filling my 32 oz bottle. I am still a big water flavor person even 10 months out as I have lost my pre op desire for drinking large amounts of tap water without flavor.

One thing I need to work on is drinking during a workout. Hardly do. I think it is just because I do not have a good habit formed. On my running day when i do about 10 k in an hour, i am not drinking during the run. On my non running day WOD is really intense, drinking during a WOD is something I REALLY need to work on. For example, yesterday I did the following in 70-80 F weather:

Warm up:

500 m row ( about 2 min / 500 m)

20 air squats

20 push ups

20 pull ups

20 v-ups

20 sit ups

WOD:

2 mile fast run ( 12 min)

20 squats @ 75 lb ( 2 min)

1 mile fast run (5 min 30 sec)

8 squats @ 75 lb (1 min)

.5 mile run (3 min)

3 squats @ 75 lb (30 sec)

My PT is yelling at me to keep going at the end of each step and I am struggling. I keep going with intensity though.

15 minute AMRAP (as many sets as possible for other readers):

1 minute plank

10 v-ups

15 sit ups ( fingers above head and to toes)

20 sit ups with 15 lb medicine ball (weight above head and to toes)

I did 8 sets of these AMRAPs (after the WOD) and was on the floor after afterwards on my back huffing and puffing.

The heat kind of got to me and my squats suffered in between the running during the WOD. If had been drinking water during the WOD, the number of squats may have been better. Not sure. Something for me to work on. I find it hard to drink during the WOD as my PT will not let me stop for it. She did let me stop for a drink in between the warm up, the WOD and the 15 minute AMRAP.

Honestly I feel a little like a cold today and sore, but am planning a 10 k run min morning. Today is my 37th b-day and I am in the best shape of my life. Down 170 lb from my last b-day and @ 17% body fat.

Holy $h!t balls man, that's a lot of exercise! How many calories are you taking in? I'm getting a wee bit frustrated because the example of my workout I listed about is what I do every day (I change it up a little) and at 750 cals I haven't lost a pound in 2 weeks :/ My water could definitely be better, I'm probably only getting about 48 oz a day.

I know everyone hates when I say this, so I'll just say it once and then shut my gluten-free pie-hole...

I think you can't sustain weight loss or good health on 750 cals per day. Anything under 1000 is just too little.

I try and eat about 1200 calories a day on cross fit day and 900 a day on running day.

For example, I ate 7 x:

1. Protein shake with chia seeds (100 cal), 2 energy squares (120 cal).

2. 3 oz Protein (120 cal)

3. 3 oz protein, 2 oz veggie (150)

4. 2 energy squares (120 cal)

5. 1 AMRAP bar (300 cal)

6. 5 oz protein, 2 oz veggie (200)

7. 10 oz protein shake (100)

Total: 1210

I have gone the last 2 months with my weight staying pretty constant @ 190 since adding daily creatine and 10 lb of lean muscle after reaching gol in February 2013.

As for stalls, one day up 2 lb, another day down 2 lb. However, yesterday was a big drop of 5 lb overnight after my weight went up 5 lb from a Cinco de Mayo drink session (2 margaritas) and 2 glasses of a full Chardonnay the day before that. I ran long on may 5th and for an hour on may 6th. Women have to deal with TOM, but men have to deal with Water retention due also. as for alcohol, i am going to cut down the intake because it does mess with your weight and water retention. It also does not help when needing to run or do a WOD. Now it is about 2x a month except for the last weekend.

I drink about 1.5 gallon a day. However, I want to cut down my water drinking after dinner so I am not up 3-4 x a night in the bathroom.the chia seeds help tremendously with retaining water in the GI tract for when it is needed during working out. The Aztecs really knew what they were doing when eating a handful chia seeds before running 100 miles in the Andes.just remember to drink enough of water before and father to support the internal water retention of his sees. I always drink at least 40 oz first thing in the morning an hour before the seeds and then drink water all day long.
