Anyone thinking about their mortality?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is tomorrow...yaayyyyy!

Yesterday, I found myself thinking of what I needed to get done prior. I was crocheting a blanket for my daughter to take to college when she starts this August. I found I had to finish it prior to surgery. Now today, I'm thinking of writing a letters to my husband, son, and daughter in case something happens in surgery. Did anyone else feel like this and actually do it?

I said goodbye to my family at home and in the prep room thanked my dear wife for all of the years of happiness. I told her I would see her in the hospital room or at the gates of heaven. There was no fear.

I did the surgery because I felt like I was going to die. I found myself buying life insurance instead of getting healthy. That was my ah-ha moment.

I was at such a low point pre-surgery, I wanted to sign a DNR, just in case something went wrong.

I knew that I wasnt going to die in the OR. God wont give me that break. I have about 6 more years left before He would even let me die. I got child support to pay lol

I felt the same way. I never wrote letters, but I considered it. When I put my boys to bed the night before surgery, as I sung to them I almost cried thinking it might be the last time. When I left the kids at the babysitter's, I looked back at them as I walked out the door and thought, "this might be the last memory they have of me"... but each time I thought something like that, I reminded myself that the odds were very small that I would die... but if I didn't have surgery, my life would be shortened.

The morning of surgery, I was very calm. I felt that if something went wrong, and I didn't make it, I was ready to go.

I think it really depends on how healthy/unhealthy you are before surgery. I'm currently at a BMI under 40 and my sleep apnea & GERD seem more annoying than life threatening. So I do find myself worrying about something going wrong during surgery. I love my life (except for my weight) and I would hate for anything to happen to me that would affect my family. The idea of my kids without a mom just makes me sad. But, I'm trying to focus on the fact that I am relatively healthy which makes it less likely that anything will go wrong. I also saw on another forum that the odds of dying are higher for driving on the freeway that having the surgery. Not sure if that's true, but it does help to think about all risky things we do every day.

Too often, I am a revision from a lap band that has been in 10 years and causing me problems. I have a beautiful 3 year old boy and I am 45. I am the income earner in my house and I am so scared that something will happen.

Thanks you all! I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this way. I know the death rate/complication rate is low with this surgery. Weird, I never thought like this with past surgeries...maybe because this one is considered more elective than required as others were. Oh well, I'm still ready for it

I had thoughts that I may not survive. I think that is normal. Everyone has them. I did not write letters but I did say good bye to my wife and my father. I told them I loved them and that if anything happened to remember that I did the surgery to be with them longer. If I did not do the surgery, I was surely going to die early anyway.

Don't stress yourself. Go in with the attitude that this is going to be fine, the drs know what they are doing and its going to change your life for the better. You're going to enjoy life with the ones you love and are concerned about so much more when the weight is off. Be sure to follow the post op instructions to the letter and to the day and you will do great. I am 4 weeks out and down 20 lbs and already have so much more energy. Dont feel bad for being worried. Its normal. After my surgery I kept thinking that I couldnt believe I actually followed through with it because it was scary to think of changing you insides so drastically. Its getting better every day and with every pound off, I know it was the right choice for me and it will be for you too. Praying for you and good luck. :)

I did have those thoughts although I put nothing in writing. I told my husband what my wishes were in case I didn't make it. My kids are 10 yrs, 21 months and 9 months so I feared for their future without me. My surgery was 2/11 and everything has been fine.

I have thought about it quite a bit and I wrote lots of letters one day when I was alone. What hit me the most was when my 14 year old son told me he isn't ready for me to die, we are too close and I'm the only person who understands him. That broke my heart! But it pushed me toward the surgery rather than away from it. Chances of dying in surgery is much less than dying of obesity.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
