Hi, I am post op and have been cleared for a regular diet. I've lost 20% of my excess weight pretty quickly so my Dr. doesn't have any special guidelines for me. I have been having a hard time with Protein Drinks, I can't seem to finish any of them. ( taste wise) and I'd prefer to get my Protein from food.

Does anyone use beef Jerky as a source of protein ? I tried a small piece when my husband was eating it and I had no issues with it. I know I'd have to watch carbs/ sugar but for 100 calories and 17g protein I thought it would be a good substitute. I would be interested in if anyone else uses it or has had a adverse reaction to it with the sleeve.

** I will also want to watch sodium

Thank you in advance

My NUT turned me on to Turkey Jerky...it's loaded with Protein like the beef Jerky but with less fat. I gave a try and I'm hooked. Target and Walmart seem to have the best prices on it. Congrats on your success!

I just started beef Jerky. I love it and so Protein dense. Great snack (and sometimes meal coupled with a cheese stick)!

I've made my own Jerky, it's a lot more tender than the store bought. Youalso have more control over the sodium.

I think i saw you say this once before a few months back and it has been on my mind to try once im cleared for that level. I have not yet googled the how to yet, but is it possible to use a precooked, low sodium lunchmeat like boarshead roast beef or turkey and have the deli slice it the correct thickness or do you need to start with raw meat?

I dol't think that will work. I used to buy thin sliced steaks (a little more expensive) and then slice those into strips. I dry it in my oven on low setting with the door ajar to keep the temp down.

This thread is making my mouth Water. I still have two more days of liquid diet to go.

I don't like Jerky. A month ago I bought some for my son, and tried it. Amazing! Stan's beef jerky. Order it online.

My new best friend is Ostrim Jerkey. It is a combination of Ostrich and Beef Jerkey. It has 1.5 fat grams, 3 carbs and 14 Protein. I take small bites and chew very well. It is a great snack in the afternoon and can go anywhere! You can purchase them online but I buy mine at GNC.< /p>

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
