What helps with preventing hair loss?

Recommended Posts

I know...I know....of all the things that I'm nervous about. I've been taking 5mg of Biotin for about 2 months now before I even got approved for surgery or even knew that Hair loss was one of the "side effects" from the sleeve. Will the Biotin even help prevent hair loss after surgery? Is there any other Vitamin I can take to help prevent it?

Hi Emilee,

Here is some info I received from my dermatologist yesterday:

OK, so today I met with my dermatologist. My dermatologist explained that the type of hair loss we are experiencing is called telogen effluvium and is more due to recent shock to your system, ie., weight loss, pain, recent surgery, over or under active thyroid, childbirth, medications and other underlying conditions not just lack of Protein. The dermatologist mentioned that one could lose over 50% of your hair, but that it will grow back in 5-8 months. She suggested using minoxidil, which will stimulate the growth of new hair faster. The less expensive brands are: (both 2%)

* Equate which can be purchased at Walmart

* Kirkland Minoxidil which can be purchased at costco.

Important instructions on use:

It is important that if you do use the minoxidil, it is to be placed on your scalp, do not rub it into your hair, it will just make your hair more brittle and susceptible to breakage. Do not let it drip onto your forehead as it will cause headaches. The best application is laying back preferably into a Shampoo sink.

I hope this helps.

I had TWO goals prior to surgery. Lose weight and don't lose hair!!! I accomplished both!! :) I started taking Biotin, whatever the max amount is.....three months prior to surgery and I still take it several times a week. I never had hair loss.

Joy, Does the Chi product help with hair loss, or does it just make your thin hair look thicker?

I asked my surgeon and nutritionist about the Hair loss and they both said hair loss doesn't happen to most and that if it was going to happen Biotin would not prevent it. They did say that in patients in does happen to, typically they weren't consistently meeting the Protein or Water intakes and weren't staying up on all the Vitamins we take. She told me not to worry and if it does happen it will all grow back.

Biotin may not help, but it doesn't hurt. I didn't lose hair and my nails looked better than ever and grew like crazy. Like taking prenatal Vitamins kind of!!

I am pre op and was wondering if all the people who say they have Hair loss post op (after the initial 3 or 6 months or so) are sure that they have enough fat in their diet. Low fat diets are notorious for hair loss and I was wondering about how much fat we should eat... Does anyone post op keep track?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
