Hey friends! I found a cool site today... Meetup: World's largest community of local Meetups, clubs and groups!

You can search by city, or zip code to find others in your area who have formed groups with similar interests. there are a ton of categories: books, crafts, automotive, travel, weightloss, pets, etc!

So far, I'm going to check out a scrapbookers group.. and maybe a line dancing group! we'll see how this goes :)

Denise, I saw several in Oregon... Check it out!

Derick

I don't know if this is anything that will help you. However, I am putting dating and all that stuff on hold until I feel better about ME! This will help my fragile self esteem and heart. I think it's almost like in AA they tell people not to get into a relationship for 6 months after they have started their treatment. I think I am going to wait that long until after I start feeling better about myself. Just my plan of action. I don't want anything to interfere with this.

Derick it is tough to date, no question about it. And people can be very shallow. Dating is hard, and it's a lot of work most of the time. But sometimes you just have to dust yourself off and get back out there. I used to take things so personally in dating, and would blame everything on my weight. I changed my attitude a bit and feel that I can't make anyone like me, and I'm not just going to settle for those who do if I don't like them back. Dating is a game of numbers, so the more I can get out there and date, the more of a chance I have to meet someone I really connect with. And if I don't connect with someone, that's ok. There are plenty of people I thought were wonderful, nice, attractive people but I didn't feel that "spark". I can only assume there will be times when the same thing happens in reverse.

All that being said, I also see nothing wrong with taking a break and focusing on yourself, kind of like PigsRFlying is saying. I think it's so important to become comfortable with yourself and to build your confidence. That comes through when you're dating. So I guess Derick it's really up to you if you want to take yourself "off" the market. Either way just keep your chin up and know that you WILL meet the right girl for you! Dating is a complete pain in the ass, but it's a necessary evil.

I am tired of looking for relationships, dealing with shallow women and being shot down. I am tired of doing the work for nothing or very little.

Maybe I should just wait until I am considered "normal" by society's standards.

Any thoughts?

umm...yea i have some thoughts!!!!

Chrispy, you have a great attitude about dating.

Derick, there are a lot of shallow people out there, men and women. And, I think everyone in here can relate to what you're saying since we all have the same issue. The last few years it seems like the only socially-acceptable things to make fun of are smokers and fat people.

In an effort to find acceptance in the past, I have checked out the BBW/BBW Admirer dating scene and was disappointed to find out that the girls, for the most part, were total sluts. I have an (ex)friend who has been involved with a couple of those groups over the years, and I've heard some pretty appalling stories that made me turn and run the other direction. And, I am no prude.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Since I had a band adjustment on Saturday, I didn't get out and do much of anything. It's awkward being out with other people when you're on liquids and soft foods.

Good evening to all:

I read your posts and realized that no matter where we come from all us single people have the same issues. I would love to join this thread so I'm going to tell you a little about myself:

I'm 47 years old, never married, kissed many frogs but none turned into my prince. I live in Toronto, Canada and enjoy reading, aquafit and travelling.

Looking forward to sharing experiences with you all.

Hi Derick, I agree with Chrispy 100%. Try not to take the non-interest personal, it's too bad they don't take the time to get to know you. I'm sure you're a great fella!

I can understand the frustration - sounds like you're trying to find a nice girl. At your age (12 yrs ago) I had the same problem, I was overweight and had trouble drawing interest... but I was also a bit introverted and unsure of myself, so I probably wasn't putting out the vibes that attract the right sorts of people. I joined a Young Adult Group thru a local church and got involved in the activities they planned... there was something every weekend - movies, bowling, concerts, etc. We even went on a ski trip to Breckenridge together. A group of about 12 of us have remained friends to this day... two of the couples in our group met at these events and later married. But, it was a great way to meet people -- you just attend the events you enjoy & eventually you meet people and begin friendships.

Don't give up. Instead of looking for a relationship now, make it a point to go out and have fun with friends and acquaintances you like to spend time with. You're bound to meet other people thru your friends and the fun places you decide to go.

I'm not sure what society considers "normal" anymore... but, don't paint yourself in that box. You've done an awesome job, 148 lbs down is a HUGE accomplishment. At 332, I don't see why you can't expect to attract a FLY lady :P

Get out there and try to make those ladies think outside their box! Show them what a great personality you have and what they would miss out on if they don't take the time to get to know you.

Sorry - just call me 'Head Cheerleader'... can't be a Mom without trying to make everything seem brighter and with endless possibilities.

marcar35 - HELLO! Welcome to the group :) I agree - as singles we share so many similar issues. We can connect on the weight struggle as well. Toronto sounds like fun, have you always lived there? How is the dating scene? Are other singles more approachable, or does it seem as difficult as we find it?

Wishing you all the best, happy hump day!

Hello Christpygal and Karla:

Thanks for your warm welcome.

Toronto is a great city but the dating scene is the same as everywhere else. How many of us have gone to nightclubs/bars and watched the guys holding up the walls? ;)

I was born in Italy and moved to Toronto when I was 13 years old. I've lived here ever since (with the exception of 4 years when I moved to Montreal for work reasons). I love Toronto, it's a beautiful multicultural city filled with single people and yes it can be great fun - but finding your soulmate is as difficult as any other big city.

Karla - we have something else in common - a name!!!

All the best - Carla

Did anyone see that show Big Medicine? It's about weight loss surgery. The last one was about a girl that got down to goal weight after having RNY. Then she had plastic surgery and she looked great. She is 30 years old and has never been out on a date. She says she doesn't know how to act around men. She still has very low self esteem from being overweight her whole life.

It was pretty interesting.

Denise, yes I love BigMedicine! I tivo it every week. I think they are finally having someone with the band on it soon too. It's a great show to watch - always reminds me of why I had weight loss surgery.

JC that is awesome! Way to go. But, uh, tone it down a bit. You can't weigh less than I do! haha Just kidding. I've heard great things about the couch to 5k program.

So what a week it's been for me. I lost my friend to Ovarian Cancer on Tuesday morning after a long, tough battle. I think I've been home all of an hour since Monday. It was so hard to see her suffering, so I'm happy she's at peace now. During all this I met a guy, while I was on my dating "break", and we've been trying to meet up all week, but I have to keep canceling on him. lol. He's been so understanding and seems soooooo nice. We talk on the phone every day for at least an hour, and I think his pics on the computer are cute, so I'm actually getting hope up for this one. That's dangerous though. I try not to spend too much time getting to know someone on the phone before I meet them because it can just build things up too much. But hey, what's meant to be is meant to be so we'll see how it goes. I'm going on vacation next week but we're planning on meeting up before I leave, so I'll let you know how it goes. Man, a week without computer access. I'm not sure I'll make it! lol

Chrispy, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend! Hang in there!

Good luck with the new guy. It always seems to happen when you least expect it or want it, doesn't it? :)

I watch Big Medicine, too. I love it.

JC, congrats! How exciting! Is there a reward for when you reach goal?

Chrispy, I'm sorry about your friend but excited about the new guy. Keep us posted.

Not much happening here this week. The scales aren't budging! :)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
