Day 5 post op, doing great and feeling great! Ive been sipping Water, clear broth, Protein shakes.... THEN I ate a teaspoon of soft ice cream today. I had very slight discomfort and I wont be doing that again!!! But now I'm scared to death I did that. :( i feel fine now but glad to have the wake up call to stay the course. Just needing assurance I didn't spring a leak over it.

Thank you so much for replying. Its scary reading some posts about what people venture out and try so few days post op - I did a search and saw lots of things but nothing on ice cream. I'm glad I looked around and read because it quickly put me back on the straight and narrow! Your reply eased my worry, thanks again.

my hubby tried some ice cream that was sugar free and weight watchers acceptable... but what happen is that it too hurt his stomach. So needless to say.. he wont be trying that again.. he had surgery dec 27 and all is well.. just he cant eat that anymore.. you will come across things like that.. stuff you used to be able to eat..and cant now.. sort of a good thing for sure.. I have stuff like that too.. so I steer clear from them.. trial and error.. I had surgery dec20.. and doing great.. you learn along the way what your cut off point is.. I just pay attention to my stomach.. it tells me when enough is enough and Im learning just about eye balling what that amt. is. Ive not ever tried things im not suppose to have.. I figure that if the doc says no. its for a reason.. and plus I read here the stuff people eat after surgery and im totally shocked.. Im not messing this up.. Ive got a 2nd chance..and im not gonna sabatoge this or ruin it in anyway. keep up the good work of getting back on track.. it does get easier and the weight just falls right off.. its great.

You're okay... Oh I remember my first cheat, it was soft serve ice cream at the mall...I ate the entire little cup... About twenty minutes later I was sweating so bad I looked like I just took a shower.. I was drenched in sweat...everyone was staring at me lol

Never again

It' tough finding out what your stomach will tolerate, even if it is on the approved food list. I was hurting pretty good after eating sugar free Jell-O or sugar free popsicles. But I had no problem with Protein drinks, cream of chicken or cream of mushroom Soup by the end of the 5th or 6th day.

But I wasn't eating much of anything the 1st 4 or 5 days, I was hurting too much. Every once in a while I would take a nibble of a popsicle. And stick my head in the freezer. The cold air seemed to help a lot.

I developed my own stomach testing system. Eat 1/4 teaspoon of the food and wait 5 minutes, no problems, eat 1/2 teaspoon, wait another 5 minutes. If I've had no stomach upset at that point, I know I can tolerate the food.

Thanks Nancy and Less - it was a wake up call! Thankfully nothing harmful, but Good enough to keep this girl in line! One day I may try again in the way off future when more foods become acceptable for me to try and tollerate. Until then, pass the broth!! Lol. Thank you for sharing, I feel much better!

Yeah, I guess it was bound to happen, my first brush with a food my sleeve said no to! Sorry you had a rough time, I know what you mean about the freezer feeling good, but I'm opposite, I feel good in a warm shower! Lol

Thanks, that testing system is a good idea! I'll try it that way next time. Thank goodness my sleeve reacted quickly or I would have been in sweats like Less posted!

Yeah, when you haven't had any real sugar for a long time, the body just goes "hell no."

So easy to get re-acclimated to, though :(

He let me have half Protein shake/half Water. I was so weak! I called him and he said I could do that. It helped me feel better and didn't taste too bad! :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
