How do you deal with the cravings?

Recommended Posts

OMG, I am dying  I am 3 weeks out and feeling really good, but still get exhausted out of nowhere! I am not hungry at all, it is a chore to eat/drink what I need to every day. BUT OMG I am craving junk. It's not like I can eat it anyway, but I WANT IT!

My wants right now....

Reeses PB cup

grilled cheese on sourdough

In n Out cheeseburger

Cake (it's my birthday and I want cake )

and...

spaghettios from the can .... and I hate them so why am I craving them :rofl

How on earth do you guys deal with the psychological cravings? I am losing my mind!

  • Eat Protein first (too full for junk after that)
  • Tell myself I can have the treat at a later date
  • Remind myself that this stuff is available at the store whenever I want it. I do not have to eat it now.
  • Do something else that smells nice, such as a candle, lip gloss, and hand lotion
  • Drink a cup of hot tea or other low cal beverage
  • Remind myself each time I resist something bad for me, it's like building a willpower muscle.
  • Eat something similar but with less calories. For example, instead of cake, vanilla Protein Shake. Not ideal, but does have that sweet vanilla taste.

I'm curious, have you been eating mashed potatoes? I notice that everything you are craving is full of carbs. Carb cravings are usually triggered by eating other carbs.

I haven't had any cravings yet or really any hunger even. It's kind of wierd.

I am not ever hungry so I'm not dealing with hunger but I certainly crave things. I do as someone above said...tell myself I will be able to eat these things again, just not yet! There are things my body needs a lot more than what I am craving. I did have a french fry (just one) and 5 reeses pieces candies and amazingly enough was satisfied with that little amount. :) I am also having crazy potato chip cravings and I never even ate them pre-op! lol

I have had them once or twice, mostly I'm eating Soups, chicken, eggs, etc. I am a carb junkie, so craving them makes sense  I just can't believe I'm craving things I don't normally like...like the spaghettios, they are gross, but I really want them

I also want a pickle, some baby carrots with balsamic vinaigrette, and a chopped salad with pecans...so it's not only carbs, but they are definitely the big cravings right now :(

My cravings were for starch when I get stressed. I still get them but it try to do something else or have a piece of cheese. I did get the worst craving for chocolate the other day, started today, and I had a piece of dark chocolate. Not a bag, not 2 bags but part of one piece. I felt good about it. Not because I caved but because I was satisfied with the taste. I came into this not to deprive myself but certainly not to allow myself overindulge. It's just not worth it.

Good luck. Those cravings will subside in time. And you'll get better at redirecting yourself.

Happy Birthday!!!!

In my experience, if I ignore the cravings, they go away. Each day gets easier and easier and I feel stronger for avoiding the temptation.

Good luck and I hope you have a great birthday!!

When I'm at work its easier for me to resist and just say no, I think it's bc I don't want my co workers to see me cave in LOL there's always bad food at work but I drink my Protein Shake instead. On my days off its really hard, bc I do get cravings A LOT! but since I live alone I don't have any junk food in the house, I do get depressed and I used to be an emotional eater, so I have to keep busy so I don't spiral down that road again.

Sounds to me like you are mourning the loss of all the foods you can't have and thinking also of new ones. Hang in there and keep yourself busy, eat high Protein and limit your carbs as much as you can at this stage.

Im right there with ya I'm two weeks out. On my two week follow up on the 31st (my bday) I was craving watermelon with a fiery passion along with strawberries and grapes to a lesser degree. I was able to kind of work backwards n realized those cravings were most likely associated with being a little dehydrated.

Ive also been craving buttered wheat toast, saltines and sprite all things i usually ate when im sick (i have the flu sadly) So a lot of the time you can find a reason behind cravings whether its something in the food your body needs or just a situation that you associate with a certain food, i can already see craving doritos and pb on celery during the super bowl lol.

Ive also been wanting pizza or more accurately Pizza Crust and ive always disliked pizza not sure the reasoning behind that one :)

Good luck and I'd say look for alternatives.

This is entirely possible. I do miss my comfort foods.

OTOH, I have always loved salads and raw veggies and I admit, I am missing them, a lot. Mostly, I'm missing having "crunch" in my diet.

I think abstinence is the best policy for defeating food cravings. The longer you abstain the easier it will be until you have no cravings for said foods. Good luck!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
