Will i get service at these places, or will I have to purchase the overpriced ATTmx package?

I got service, but it cost me .50 cents per minute to talk, and $1.00 per text message to send or recieve. I have Verizon. Some people buy a pre paid Mexico phone, I ended up downloading an app that let me make calls through Wi-Fi, and I told everyone if they text messaged me I would shoot them ;) Good luck!

What app did you download....

Hi~

I also have AT&T.

Depending on where you get your surgery done, they should have a phone in your room w/ a local #. I called out on my room phone all the time (I was alone). I also received calls to my room. Of course the Marriott was having "issues" w/ their wi-fi connection (to apple devices) while I was there. But they also have a toll free # where you can have people call & they forward to your room.

Surprisingly, I texted all the time and the only difference was about $10 while I was in Mexico.

I was afraid to look at my bill!

Best of luck to you!!

Tango was the app I used. I think Viber only works to make calls to other people that have Viber. One of my firneds has Skype, and she used that. There are many apps out there.

You could add some international data plans to your phone, but may not be worth it. Blackberry is the only one with an international data plan for $20 all others you go int'l roaming if you use their data networks. I believe you can also add an international texting plan for about $5 or $10.

WiFi should work though (normally at the Marriotts). I do recommend turning off all the automatic data "push/pull" on the phone. I had an unpleasant surprise once by incurring about $100 in international data roaming charges in Germany over a 12 hour period as my phone updated automatically everything on it's lovely 3/4G network.

The hotel I stayed at had wifi so I kept in contact with everyone via Facebook.
