Retest for H. Pylori?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

So I recently found out that I have an H. Pylori infection. Doc prescribed me three medications. My surgery is scheduled for Feb 11th. I asked the surgeon's office if they would retest me for h. pylori to see if the medicines worked. They said they usually dont and that once u complete the 14 days of medicine the infection will be gone. Does anyone else have input about this? Those of you who were infectes with H. Pylori did ur surgeon's office retest u after ur course of medicine? Should I push for a retest or am I being paranoid? So far I have not missed a dose of my medicine (I have 7 more days to go). I am sooooo confused because I do not want any unncessary complications post surgery:/

Once you test positive for H Pylori, you will always test positive for H Pylori.

The only way you can test for it after you've tested positive, is through a stool sample.

I tested positive for it also. I had the triple cocktail of meds and then was rechecked for it and was negative. They check through a breath test. Its very simple- you blow into a one.way valved bag first. Then you drink this really sweet drink, wait 30 minutes and do the breath in the bag.again. I would definitely want.retested.to make sure the.meds cleared it up before surgery.

I am feeling the same way that I want to be retested for H. Pylori before surgery just to make sure. I am going to run that by my surgeon my last appt. I will mention the breath test. Thanks for sharing ur experience, I feel less weird wanting a neg result before surgery.

You dont have h pylori forever. After treatment of H. pylori , it is necessary to repeat breath or stool tests to see if the germ has been killed or eradicated for good. Only breath tests or endoscopy with biopsy can be used to prove that the bacterium has been eradicated. The blood tests *(serology ) is not suitable to monitor H.pylori eradication because antibodies to H.pylori may remain positive for months or even years after successfully killing the H. pylori .

Oh ok well hopefully it doesnt take as long to get results for the retest. I want to be ABSOLUTELY sure there is no h. Pylori before I have surgery

I have h pylori and I'm currently on that lovely combo of meds. My surgeon said after the 14 days, they can do a breath test or stool sample test. My surgeons office even does the breath test if I want him to do it instead of my gastro. He also said once you've had it and taken the meds, it's very rare to contract it again.

I have h pylori and i did the med treatment and got the test and guess wat ... Positive again so i did a second stronger treatment and I'm having an endoscopy done. I suggest u do get the test because h pylori can really mess with your sleeve since it causes ulcers which can lead to stomage cancer. Better be safe than sorry. Good luck

How long do the results take for a breath test?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
