I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure and have been put on meds once a day. Does anyone else have the same situation and did they have to wait to get it down before surgery. I tend to also have "white coat syndrome" which my pressure goes sky high in the doctors office so I'm afraid that if it's controlled and I go to hospital for surgery, they will cancel it.

I was never "diagnosed" with high blood pressure - since I never went to a doctor about it. But my blood pressure was 142 over 96 at the time of surgery and it didn't bother my doctor. His only real concern was the prevention of blood clots in my legs - so he had me on a blood thinner for the day of surgery and the day after.

Thanks for your reply. So did your blood pressure go higher during the duration while in the hospital or did it go back down? Did you have any side effects to the blood thinner?

I've been on blood pressure meds for a few years. It's one of the reasons they gave me the surgery. Pressure shot up day after surgery but went back down again. Kept me in 3 days instead of 2 but I had a lot of vomiting and other issues.

I've been on meds for years. It's pretty controlled now 116/80.

I was BP meds prior to surgery, Oct. 16, 2012. I took a pill the night before surgery and haven't needed another pill since. My blood pressure normalized immediately after surgery.

I used to take insulin and BP medicine prior to the urgent but I stopped taking both of them as per my doctor instruction cause both are normal without medicine

I was DXed just prior to surgery too and mine went down to normal almost immediately too. So did the blood sugar (my 2 week labs) and sleep apnea.

BP is now 120/70

Thanks. So were you on BP meds before surgery? Was it stabilized in the hospital or did they have to give you meds?

BTW - congrats on your weight loss! that is awesome! Just want to fast forward to my one year already!

I was borderline and received an RX for potassiumfor the BP just pre-op. I was also RXed Metaformin for the diabetes just a week prior to surgery. I do not recommend this, but I do not like meds and never took them. I wanted to wait and see what the surgery would do.

All the problems resolved.

I still have high cholesterol, but it's more to do with heredity than diet. I refuse to take statins and it drives my PCP nuts. I hear they do more damage than good. I have also been reading that high cholesterol is not necessarily bad depending on other factors.

A year will be here before you know it and I wouldn't have you miss out on all the good things this year will bring.

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure but was only prescribed a Water pill since I was having surgery anyway. It was normally 160/120. I remember going to have my PICC line put in that the lady said I was 180/? and that I needed to calm down.

Immediately after surgery my BP was normal. It has been normal ever since. I'm sure that the preop diet helped get a lot of the salt out of my system and I've been intaking very low sodium since.

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid mine will spike on day of surgery and I won't be able to calm down. I don't do well in hospital settings. I just don't want my surgery cancelled once I get there. Haven't started pre-op diet yet, so I'm hoping between that and the med, it will be ok.

I really doubt it would be cancelled. I believe they only took my BP once on the day of surgery when I first got there and I'm sure it was high, I was nervous! I'm sure once they gave me that lovely little shot that it came down.
