New to the loser's bench and having some questions RE consumption! Please help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am new to the sleeved world and can happily say that I was sleeved with Dr. Aceves on 1.5.12. Today is my 4th sleeve day!

During my sleeve, my Dr discovered a hiatal hernia which he repaired. This is cool, but, it's caused a considerable amount of pain through recovery. I expected to only have to recover from the sleeve and not from the hernia madness. My shoulders hurt big time!

Despite my exhaustive reading, this part of it is all new to me. I went to my US Dr. who helped me with some pain mgmgt. That solves one issue (sort of). My second issue relates to liquid consumption: I have powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup, gatorade, and whey Protein shots from Walmart. Today has been my first day out of the hospital and I've managed to get in all my Protein shot, and 1.5 servings of chicken Soup without issue. I've made it to my 70 g protein quota for the day.

Ive been sipping all day. I'm wondering--is this weird? I am trying to sip all day but that is causing me to be drink literally all day--forcing myself to focus on it all the time. Is that a bad habit? Also, I only really wait about 15-20 min in between drinks. Is this a bad habit? Also, I'm terrified of drinking too fast. My instructions from my Dr. indicate that I should only have 1.5 oz per 15 min. I drank my 8 oz soup on about 35-45 min wihtout pain. Could i be stretching my sleeve?

I'm also a bit thirsty now, so I want to have a drink of Water. Is this constant drinking a bad habit? I haven't tracked perfectly but assume I must have had about 50 oz of liquid today.

Hoping some sleeve veterans might be able to get me some advice! I just dont want to be drinking too fast and ruin things! My body hasn't given me the signs to stop, but perhaps I'm not hearing them?

I was told to keep something beside me & sip on it all day to avoid dehydration...the # 1 complication after sleeve. I do & haven't had any problems....but I just had surgery 12/17.

Congrats & welcome the Dark Side. BTW, we lied about the Cookies.

Well let's see here.

The first question I have is how much liquid are you getting in in a day?

You're first priority is to get at least 64oz of some type of liquid. This is before you even consider adding Protein. If you can accomplish this then by all means lets add Protein to it.

Unfortunately I do have some bad news for you. Those Protein Shots that Walmart sells are completely useless & should not be counted in your daily protein consumption. I understand that they say whey on the label, but look at the ingredients. They are mostly collagen/gelatin. If you want a protein shot, the only real whey protein shot I am aware of us "Yes Whey" and the only sources that I know of are online.

As for the 1.5oz per 15 min rule, I believe that to be more of a guideline. I never experienced any liquid restriction and could drink a 23oz bottle of Water in under 15min right from the start. Don't get me wrong, im not suggesting you try to consume that quickly, but liquids do pass from the stomach very quickly and as long as you are not guzzling it, I believe you'd be fine to experiment with sipping a bit more often.

Can you elaborate what to check on data sheet of Protein drinks and what things to ensure ? and why Protein shots from Walmart are useless ?

Can you elaborate what to check on data sheet of Protein drinks and what things to ensure ? and why Protein Shots from Walmart are useless ?

It's not only the shots from Walmart that are bad. They are all useless, with one exception. That exception being "yes whey" it is the only true whey Protein shot. All of the others use collagen/gelatin as their primary source and then add a tiny amount of whey so if they are sued they can claim that their product does contain "some" whey.

collagen aka Gelatin is a protein that is derived primarily from scraping the cow hide. It cannot be digested by the human body and therefore ends up being left behind in the bathroom.

To give you an idea how bad collagen is I'll talk a bit about the PDCAAS

(protein digestibility corrected amino acid score)

The PDCAAS is the newest scoring method for anylizing the effectiveness of protein to the human body. The scores on this test can range from 0.000 to 1.000

Whey Proteins score a 1.000 the are a complete protein source & are completely bioavailable.

Collagen/Gelatin scores a 0.086 and is consistantly the absolute bottom of the list of all tested Proteins.

And then the PER (protein efficiency rating). Collagen is so bad that it cannot even be measured on this scale.

Why do supplement companies use this?

It is as simple as following the money. Collagen is plentiful & very cheap. They can claim their product contains massive amounts of protein even though virtually none of it is usable by the human body.

How can they get away with that?

Unfortunately the FDA does not regulate the supplement industry. If these items were considered a food or a drug they would fall under FDA regulation an like any food or drug that contains large amounts collagen/gelatin they would be required to post a notice on their label that reads "Not a significant source of protein".

According to my NUT, you want to look at the ingredients list. To make sure you are getting high quality Protein powder, she recommended making sure it says Protein ISOLATE, not protein concentrate.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
