Do I really have to do two weeks pre op?

Recommended Posts

I cannot work and deal with Optifast and Jello for two weeks? Is this a predictor of how I will do postoperative because it will be a long time before I will be able to eat again. Can anyone tell me if you get headaches from not eating postoperatively.

Your body doesn't feel hungry anymore post-op... No you won't be eating but in general you really won't care (aside from head hunger).

My surgeon has me on a 1000 Calorie diet, Protein 60 grams/day Fluid 64 oz/day

Basically it's like 2 lean cuisine meals per day Protein Drinks and Vitamins and lots of Water. It's very tolerable to a full liquid diet

Same thing with me' date=' we got weighed the 1st time. And every appointment our weight is taken. I was told that the last weighing in is the day of surgery. The md will cancel surgery if i gain, This is kaiser permanente.[/quote']

Yep I'm at kaiser too, and get weighed every time I go in. At my first meeting with my surgeon I was given the amount I had to lose to qualify for surgery, along with their bariatric diet which is basically 3oz Protein, 1/2c cooked veggies, 1 small fruit, 1 serving carbs (1/3c rice for example) and 1 fat. There is an extra serving of fruit and an extra serving of carb added to either lunch or dinner. I've been following that for about 7 weeks and have lost about 35 lbs. my goal was only 13lbs, but since my recorded loss is more I can't gain any weight or they will cancel surgery even the day of my surgery. The first thing they do when I get to the hospital is weigh me. I am not required to do a prolonged prep though. Only 2 days. One day full liquid and one day clear liquid. I think that's better. I've been getting used to what my diet should be like after surgery already so I know I can handle it (after I'm back to regular foods of course). I too have had some slip ups. My family always has bad food around so ill take a bite of whatever. I'm also a baker/ cake decorator so that's been a big hurdle. I have to taste recipes when I try something new. I console myself with at least I'm not eating a huge piece anymore but even that one bite is something I worry about. And with the holidays here my kitchen is in full swing! Good luck on making it through the rest of your diet. I'm sure one lapse isn't going to kill you as long as you just move forward and leave those chips behind you.

Everyone is so different, my doctor didn't give me any weight requirements. I'm on a liquid diet for 3 days. I've been eating whatever I want and having a few food funerals. It depends on your surgeon I guess.

I was told that surgery would be cancelled if I didn't meet my weight loss point. I am trying the best way I can to get to 270lbs by January 8th. That's the day my surgery will be scheduled. Wish me luck! lol

Gail, I don't know of any places that have a weight loss requirement!

However

If during your weight management if you gain weight during that time your insurance can deny your surgery.

My Surgeon will not do surgery on anybody over 500 lbs risk is to high you must get below 500 to have surgery.

And the whole reason for the preop diet some are liquid some are low calorie. Is to reduce the size of your liver. Sometimes your Liver can be to large to do the surgery.

I'm at kaiser and they give you a weight loss goal. Many of the pre surgery appts can't even be made until you meet the goal. Also I believe not only are we held to our goal weight but after we lose that amount if we lose additional weight and its recorded in our chart, we are held accountable for that weight loss as well. If we show up for surgery and are over the weight limit the surgery is cancelled. I only had to lose 13lbs but have lost 34.6 lbs. I'm just trying to make it 2 more weeks , without gaining any weight.

To be honest, I think the weight loss goal pre

op is a bit of a joke. I understand losing 5-10 lbs week before to shrink the liver. That's important and not too hard to do one week prior. However I wish the insurance companies put more emphasis on the psych aspect of the surgery and behavior modification- as that is what most people really need. Of course there are special circumstances, but they don't make people who are getting knee replacements lose weight or prove they are going to exercise after surgery before allowing them treatment. Again, it's important to prepare and part if that is getting the liquids ready for post op and all that, but the stress of having to lose would have probably given me high blood pressure! I'd be interested to see some research on this.

I was on a 2 week low carb diet which allowed me to shrink my liver. I really enjoyed the food on it and there was plenty of it so I didn't feel hungry at all. I still have the diet, if you would like me to send you it then send me your email address and I will get it to you ASAP. Merry Xmas eve XXxxx

According to my surgeon, the pre op diet has 2 goals. To reduce the size of your liver of course but also it's the only tangible way for them to evaluate your readiness to make lifestyle changes necessary for sustained results.

I don't mean to be a putz...but it comes naturally to me so I must say this...

If you can't handle two weeks...fourteen days....one millionth of your life on a two week program prior to having your stomach cut out..major surgery....don't do the surgery at all. You aren't ready.

Flame away, but really, if you can't take that you risk screwing up after surgery, which is life and death.

I agree. This is the last diet you will ever be on. You are planning on increasing you're life span by years, if not decades. The 2 week preop diet won't kill you. Going against your surgeons advise or staying fat, just might. Make your decision. Be proud of it and own it.

My dr said add skim milk or low fat milk to your shakes... I can have 4 shakes 2 cups of broth 2 sugar free jellos sugar free 2 popsicles thru out the day and all the Water I can drink!! I think every thing will be ok?

That is the same diet I've been on for 5 days.. It really wasn't that bad at all. Today I started my 48 hr clear liquid.. It was a lot tougher! It will all be worth it in the end! :)

The liver stores carbohydrates. That is why we have large livers, since most of us overdo the carbs. I may be wrong, but I think most patients who do not have to do the two week preop diet, may be starting out at lower BMIs. Can anyone confirm this?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
