I am preop, scheduled for Monday, but I'm cheating and coming to the postop board to ask people who have already been sleeved and not just heard of stories. In your experience, did you get a postop drain that was removed the next day? Is this routine procedure to have a drain? I haven't been worried at all about the procedure or the pain. The drain thing (actually the pain with removal of the drain) has me quite anxious! Thanks in advance for any answers!!!

I had the drain for a week. It didn't hurt just uncomfortable, makes it hard to sleep. Doesn't hurt when they remove it, just feels funny. Don't stress the drain, not worth it promise :-)

Don't worry about the drain. Mines came out on day three right before discharge from the hospital. It did not hurt but it was uncomfortable and felt weird. The nurse didn't warn before she started and I didn't know what to expect. Once she saw my face and started moving slower, I was ok.

Ask your doc if they routinely do a drain. Many only use it if they are also removing a lap band. I never had one.

I had a drain and when mine was removed it was exceptionally uncomfortable. Granted I was in a lot of pain and on quite a lot of meds at the time, but I remember there being a lot of profanity and a comment comparing it to the removal of an alien baby.

Unfortunately, you need the drain. My doctor said that he was testing the Fluid in the drain which would tell if I had a leak in my new stomach.

My drain ended up causing me a lot of discomfort in my left shoulder blade. The only explanation my doctor could give me was that the drain may have been laying close to a nerve that radiated up to my shoulder blade. The very second that he pulled it out, the pain went away!

i just had surgery 14 days ago and i had a revision from lapband to sleeve. with a revision, i had to have a tube down my nose for 2 days plus the drain. hands down, the tube down my nose was the worst. it was uncomfortable and the removal disgusted me. after that, nothing could be any worse.

to me, having the surgical tape removed hurt more than the actual removal of the drain. i was told to lay on my back, breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth and each time i did that the tube was pulled. i did that like 5 times and honestly, i didn't hurt... it felt weird, it was uncomfortable (because it's extremely long) but you will feel SO much better when it's out.

i had the drain for 3 days.

LOL!!! That totally sounds like something that would come out of my mouth!!!

I don't know why there is this sudden anxiety...maybe because I'm getting really close to my date. I am by no means a titty baby. I have had a bone marrow biopsy before and equate that with the most excruciating pain ever. Of course, I have no children, so I can't compare the two, but holy smokes. That was awful! Just reading a few comments about the pain or minimal discomfort scares the beejeezus out of me! Thanks everyone!!!!

I guess it varies doc to doc. I've read some people are staying in the hospital until day 3 and I'm supposed to only stay one night.

I had a drain until 1 week post op. I think alot of people have had drains. It isn't painful but just a little uncomfortable and in the way. Removing the drain for me wasn't painful, it just felt a little weird. It was a relief to have it out and the discomfort instantly went away. Of course I didn't look at them pulling it out or I would have freaked out!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
