Question For Ex-Banders Who Are Already Post Sleeve. Need Your Pov! Since You've Experienced Both What Are Your Thoughts And Experiences?

Recommended Posts

I was banded in 2008 and lost 70+ pounds. After I had skin removed in 2009 they opened the band for me to get nutrients and its never been the same. I gained it back. Looking back I realized I lost because I couldn't eat and would throw up or get stuck. I moved to slider foods and gained and also because I never got a sweet spot. I've been prepping for a revision to the sleeve since spring with therapy, classes, and all my clearance tests. I have my final dr visit 11/1 and am hoping for surgery on 11/28. I'm curious to find out how the two types of WLS are different feeling and how you eat etc. My thinking is that the VGS stomach will make you feel full like a normal stomach but just smaller amounts...where the band is moving food through a small hole and filling a top pouch instead of a full stomach feel. Do you throw up? Do you dump? I've heard someVGS do. I just want some scoop from those who've been there. Thanks!!! This is my first post :)

I was banded back in 2005...only lost 40 pounds....the first year....eventually regained it plus 20 pounds in 2012, when I decided to revise to the sleeve in June....as of today I am 75 pounds lighter....and counting...

I regret not revising sooner, so so happy!

In answer to your question, I feel that the sleeve does a much more effective job of reducing hunger.

Having said that, realize that not everyone remains hunger free for the long term. Mine started ramping up after about 7 or so months. Somebody came back on these forums a while back and his appetite returned at about 2 years post op and he was regaining so looking to revise to the DS or RNY. I am mentioning this because some people think that post sleeve they will never feel hunger again and that just isn't true for many people. Most people see a disappearance of hunger for awhile and even when it returns it is much less intense then pre-op but you can't completely rely on that alone.

Anyway, sleeve is great compared to the band!

I had my revision on September 10th. The great thing is you actually CAN eat food. You know what I mean chicken, meats, yogurt. All of these foods I had trouble with the band some days I could some days I couldn't. I don't miss that at all. I can actually also swallow pills, I couldn't do that with the band. The great benefit of having the band first is you already know what full is(upper part of chest), you can eat small portions slowly. Even though I am not far out I have not vomited, I know when I am full and stop eating. There are already so many foods that I wasn't eating because of the band that I don't miss any. I have no cravings, no hunger, following the plan to a "T". I love the sleeve and am 110% sure that I did the right thing. No worries.

Thank you all for replying! I just needed to know what I was thinking was on the right track. A lot of my family think I am looking for a quick fix. I'm not. My sister says if I just eat less and exercise then I don't need surgery again and waste my time/money!! I know me and I'm so in a different place now. I'm glad to have reassurance.

I am sorry, but in my book telling a morbidly obese person to just "eat less and exercise more" is like telling a diabetic to make more insulin.

The people out there who have never been more 25 pounds overweight have no idea. I have come to believe that once obesity has you in it's claws your odds of getting out alive without drastic intervention is very very very low. I used to think I was just lame and lacked self control to eat right and exercise. That I was somehow "broken" that I lost 85# (was still well over 200#) on weight watchers and within 5 years had regained 51 of those pounds. I tried every diet, every program, therapy, tried OA I had short term success with some (WW being the best) but I could not seem to really get significant amount of weight off and keep it off. Then, what got scary in the last year or two before my sleeve, I couldn't even lose a small amount of weight, nothing was working.

Well, what I have come to understand, based on info from my surgeon, from articles I have read, and reflecting on my history and so many stories I have read here.... That the body's response to obesity is to crave more food and to restore the weight anytime you do manage to lose a few pounds. Yes, we do have lifestyle choices to make and need to take responsibility for that, but without the surgery, morbidly obese people have very little chance to become normal weight (or anywhere near).

I will be 3 weeks post op with my sleeve tomorrow. My band came out in may in an emergency situation after slipping to the middle of my stomach. It was not the first time it had slipped. I managed to lose 50 pounds with the band, but gained back 17 before deciding to revise.

I have felt better with the sleeve than I ever did with the band, and I have lost the 17 pounds already. I wish I had chosen the sleeve from the beginning.

Thank you everyone! I'm hearing that you all wish you'd done the sleeve first. Makes me feel good about my decision and listening to my gut. I had my last appt today pre-op and found out that my insurance will cover it! I'm planning for 11-28 to be revision day! Bye bye band day! :)

I'm nervous....

How long have you had the band? It's a pretty personal decision on whether you decide it works it works for you or not. You may get a biased opinion here since most of us have converted or are in the process of.

Hi. I had the lap band for almost two years before I had to have it removed through emergency for vomiting in my sleep the beginning of June 2012. I hated that band from day one but it helped me lose alot of weight (I lost 134lbs) the band made me never eat because I would either vomit it all up or couldn't even get Water down for a day or two. I use to live on a diet of sunflower seeds, water, popcorn, and slushies because that seemed to be all I could get down. I had gastric sleeve surgery on the 15th of November and I can say it was the BEST THING I have ever done for myself. I have lost 16lbs so far and I can actually drink and eat (though its still puréed). Please don't suffer with the band!!! I am very thankful that I made this change and hope that with the support of everyone here I will be successful!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
