Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was watching videos on youtube and saw a few ppl with tubes coming out of one of their incisions! I think they are drainage tubes or something..does everyone get them!?!?!? Do they hurt when removed??!?!?!?!?

Yep, we all get them. No, it doesn't really 'hurt' when the remove it, but it's longer than I thought it was, and it felt weird. Best description Ive got for that sensation. Weird.

Don't sweat it though, it only took like 2-3 seconds to get it out.

Wow! We must have watched some of the same videos! It looked like some voodoo snake. Lol. It has to feel weird being pulled from the insides.

We don't all get them. I didn't have drains and neither did any of my friends or family members. It really depends on our surgeon and your own individual health needs.

I didn't have them either. My surgeon said it depended on how well he could get all the excess Fluid out.

I didn't have drain tubes either. I asked my surgeon why some people do and some don't he said it is completely the surgeon's choice.

As a matter of fact, I have one in right now. It comes out on Thursday at my first follow-up appointment. I'm dreading that "weird" feeling and what they'll do to close up the area. Yikes!!

From what I understand, it's there to drain the excess Fluid (saline) that's put in the abdomen during surgery. It's gross; but easy to care for. I just can't wait to get it out.

Good luck!

I had one. It doesn't really hurt when it's in, but it can be a little uncomfortable when trying to sleep, move around etc. It doesn't hurt coming out either, but it does feel really weird coming out!

I had one. They removed it before I left the hospital. I think it was the most discomfort of the whole surgery. I had to lay flat to relieve the pressure and yes, I winced when it came out. I felt so much better when it was out.

I had one too. Mine was in a week due to having to have an open surgery instead of laparoscopic surgery. It was not painful at all and I hardly had any feeling when it was removed. I thought it was a little strange that it was actually sewn to my skin tho but it kept it from moving around... They removed 3 stitches and it still didnt hurt at all..

I didn't feel mine coming out at all. The benefit of having one is that they can do a leak test with it in to make sure there are no leaks.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
