Pre-Op Diet, Is What I'm Feeling Normal?

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 8 of my 14 day pre-op diet and feel like I'm doing well. Down 15lbs, sticking to my diet and following the rules. But I have noticed my hunger decreasing. I don't feel hungry for my Breakfast and by the time it hits lunch I'm slightly hungry but can't get much in before I feel full. Dinners is about normal but I am eating even smaller portions then what my diet is supposed to be. I try to eat my portions to get my Protein levels in but I can't without feeling nauseas. Plus, I feel like I'm getting dry mouth. Has anyone else had anything like this?

Strangely, i'm only a few days in and i'm feeling exactly the same way that you're describing. For example, its 10:15 AM where I live and i've been up since 6. I haven't eaten nor drank anything and i'm not hungry. Strange...

If you are getting a dry mouth you need fluids!! First sign of dehydration. You need to drink, sister!!

Darn thing!! Haha posted & left me in the dirt... Ok' date=' so as I was saying...

I've done a few VLC diets before & the same thing always happens...my stomach "shrinks" after a consistent 3-5 days. I'm not sure if it literally, physically shrinks or not, but I definitely cannot fit as much in if I try to eat normally one meal. (still pre-op currently)

The same thing happened to me when I did the Ideal Protein Diet. Once your body gets over the carb withdrawals the hunger goes away. Your body goes into Ketoacidosis so make sure you amp up your Water intake so that you don't damage your kidneys.

I have been trying figure out, why I feel the way I do. I have not been drinking enough Water though, so I gotta step it up and get it in. Today I actually felt the opposite and got so hungry I was at the point of trembling, then later this evening I could barely eat anything....weird for me

I'm sick of the sweetness! I need something savory so I've been spicing up my broths. I too must increase my Water intake.

Can someone tell me why the pre op meals chosen by the bariactric specialist are super sweet and the diets don't include real foods?

Adding healthy veggies that also decrease the liver size would make a world of difference for me.

It is strange how they tell people who are struggling with food to not eat anything solid for two weeks. I have a fabulous juicer that would pulverize veggies into a healthy alternative to these sweet Protein Drinks that are really high in carbs. :-P

Neeme maybe its reversed psychology, they want us to be sick of the sweet so by the time we are sleeved we want crave it. I bought a pure Protein 23g shake and it only has 3G of carbs, and i had the shakes yesterday so that explains the need for more carbs.

When I had my previous surgeries I had to do a"cleanse" the day before, this time the doc said wont need too. I'm on day 4 of my 2 week high protein and now I understand why.......

@shayv123; Well, I've mixed up a batch of the Protein Drink with lots of ice and a tiny bit of Water and made ice cream out of it that tasted okay. You see, I'm not a Cookies and cake girl...ice cream is my nemesis

I have a blender that makes ice cream and sorbet. I figured since it's these packets are super sweet, I'd create something that I could enjoy. You may be right! Sweetness overload could be the plan (ha). I'm on day four of my two weeks as well. I'm scheduled for Oct 24, what about you?

Same here October 24 is my sleeve date. I'm having my EGD on the 22nd, which make the all liquid diet for 2 days much easier.

I'm having a procedure on the 22nd too! i'm not doing that well on this liquid diet. At least once a day I've Been having a very light meal of veggies. This is torture!

My dr's office said three shakes and a Protein Bar is all that I could have, with 96 ozs of Water a day. They also said gatorade and sugar free Jello and popsicles. I hate sugar free anything so that will not be happening. I found two great gatorade flavors, but I don't like gatorade either. This is tough!!!

It's an upper GI Endoscopy. I thought everyone got one prior to surgery. It gives the surgery a sneak peak at what to prepare for during the sleeve surgery. (ex hernia)

I'm a revision so they didn't order a new one for me. I'd forgotten about that procedure.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
