48% Body Fat & Osteopenia

Recommended Posts

So, I had my pre-op appointment today, surgery in three weeks. Already a little stressy.

We went over my body scan and I am 48% fat. I could see my tiny little skeleton inside my gigantic blubbery self. Getting upset.

Go over my labs and my bone density scan. I've shrunk an inch in the last two years and broke my ankle jogging last October, but my PCP repeatedly tells me that my Calcium levels aren't a big deal, take a multi-Vitamin. Today I hear that I have osteopenia (pre-osteoperosis) and am .02% bone loss away from needing Boniva or something. Why didn't anyone tell me before?!? I'm only 32 for goodness sakes.

Just a little upset, thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Were your Calcium levels low before? They probably didn't think it was a big deal because of your age, that is unfortunate.

What type of body scan did they give you? I've been thinking about getting some type of BodPod or other body/bone scan to see where I'm at now, and then another one in a year or two.

It is good your program does that, I had no tests like that before or after my surgery. At least now you know and can be more proactive with calcium and exercise.

Also, weight-bearing exercise and less carbonated beverages will help get your bone density levels back up.

The test says Hologic, it is a body composition test with really detailed color printouts. It is actually really neat.

I am glad to know I'm not crazy, though fragile seems as bad. I really appreciate the doctor leveling with me today.

Hey cherrybombknits! I'm so sorry for your troubles! I for one am also pretty upset at the damage I've done to my body in only 25 years of life ! I'm not looking forward to hearing my bone density after anorexia and years of yoyoing between starvation and bingeing! I already have permanent scar tissue on my spine and a hump near my neck (I'm hoping shrinks with weight loss)! All you can do is focus on the future! As long as your not going the malabsorptive route I think you should be able to get your osteo probs cleared up soon! Good luck! I look forward to reading your progress!!!!!!

I am 52, sleeved 18 days ago. I asked my general doc for a bone density test & she said no I am too young (she knows I was just sleeved. Sounds like I should go back and insist OR should I ask for one thru the surgeons office? Thanks for any advice.

I would ask again and state you have been reading about the possibility of decreased bone density in sleeve patients and it would ease your mind. You don't have to say it was this forum though. Just that you had been doing some research. If you still get a no, go thru your surgeon.

Just got back from Hawaii where I fell off a rock. Thankfully my hubbala caught me or I might have a busted head. Bruises, scrapes, and a pretty gnarly sprain, but no broken bones. Things are looking up :)

I agree with Pip. Let them know you had the procedure done and let them know you'd like a baseline scan. That way you'll have a "clean" scan to go by.

52 would normally be young, but keep on them.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
