Dying On Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

So I started my pre-op diet of Protein Shakes Monday and everyday I have cheated! I'm trying so hard to keep in mind that this is for my best interest but it's gross! Any ideas how to make this pre-op diet any better?

It's tough for everyone. Following the diet will make your recovery easier.

Unfortunately, for all of us (or damn near most of us) it's suffer now or suffer later. I preferred to suffer before.

Good luck.

True! It's hard though.

Hi Cas,

What type of Protein shake are you drinking?

Im drinking the orange cream from Bariatric Advantage. It's ok for awhile after I add ice but then it's so gross after 5 drinks. Then I get light headed from not eating and Water don't help since I have the band in me right now

Would your doc allow you to make your own shakes or choose a different one? My doc uses Prescripfit, which I cannot tolerate. It is gross. I switched to Atkins and Pure Protein shakes and I doctor them up. They taste like I'm cheating! Seriously! Can you explain your feeling to the nutritionist?

Stick to it!! There are other threads going at the moment where the person has stuck to their diet, gone under and the surgeon wasn't happy with the amount of liver shrinkage...so stitched them back up and wouldn't continue! My biggest fear is waking up in pain and finding out that thu dust go ahead with the surgery! I was supposed to do a 31 days diet but they bought my surgery forward so I'm getting sleeved on the 11th September. I'm currently at day 12 of 16 and am starving!!! I'm light headed and all that- but I do not want to be opened and closed without having the surgery done. You can do this!!!!!!!!

If you cannot stick to the pre-op diet after changing Protein shakes and all--- give it up. You will find the post-op diet to be harder still. And yes, my doctor's NUT assured me that the doc had opened patients, saw the liver and knew they had not done the diet, closed them and sent them home.

Do it if you are serious, no matter what it takes.

Call the doctor's office and talk to someone. Surely you are not the first patient to have this trouble. Variety is the spice of life, so don't stick to just one kind of supplement.

Yes the pre-op is tough, but you have to realize that it is helping to ensure you have a successful surgery. I got hungry, grumpy, sad, light headed and all that. But when you think about it in that if you don't get your liver to shrink, you could be putting your life in danger during a surgery. I took a picture of myself and kept that with me at all times during the pre-op diet. When I would get discouraged, I would look at that picture and was reminded of how badly I wanted my life to change and although it was unbelievably tough, I stuck to it. I didn't care for the Protein Shakes that my doctor's office had. But I just chugged them down and told myself it was fuel for my body and its doctor's orders. You can do this! You have to set your mind to it.

those pre made shakes are all gross to me...so I make my own and this pre-op diet has been a breeze - it feels like I have a milkshake every day......and I mix it up with adding frozen cherries - there a site here that has literally 100's of Protein shake recipes - there is no reason why there is not something you would like there. Plus if my surgeon made me purchase 'their' brand or their recommended shakes, I'd just say NO - why give them more $$$. Seriously, what are they going to say - I won't do your surgery unless you drink 'such and such' shakes? no way...

Pre op is a breeze when you find a Protein mix you like - I like the Premier Protein from Walmart - jug for $20 - cant beat that. Add a 1/2 a banana and you got a great shake.< /p>

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
