I am 3 months plus out from surgery and am curious how long the hair loss lasts? I knew it was coming, but I haven't heard too much about how many months it typically lasts.

I am 8 months out. My Hair loss started at about the 5th month and was going strong until last week. I did all the preventative stuff. I took Biotin for 7 months prior to surgery and continued after. I also added "Black Current" to my regiment which was originally suggested by Dr Oz and members of VSG Talk. I get my Protein and my fluids every day. I wrote here last week complaining and worried I may become bald. Most people haven't noticed any significant hair loss because I have a lot of hair, although fine. It was suggested to try "Fall Fight" Shampoo and conditioner made by Garnier. It works. I have seen a significant slowing down especially when brushing dry hair. Is it the shampoo or is it just about the time it should stop falling out? I also had a thyroid problem during that time which can attribute to hair loss and is getting under control. I have no other complaints at all about this surgery. I was well away at my age that I would be swapping fat rolls for wrinkles, I can live with that. :-) Good luck, I hope you experience very little hair loss.

My hair has been falling out since month 3, and now at month 5, it's still going.. It was fine and thin to begin with and now it's really obvious. so obvious that my BFs kid mentioned it yesterday... "why is your hair transparent on top?! I can see your scalp!" Yeah... in public too... mortifying.

Thanks for the info. I belong to a group that were all sleeved in May and we are all talking about the Hair loss and someone thought it lasted 5 months. I wanted to see what people on here experienced and report back to them. Luckily I have thick hair but not sure it can stay that way with the handfuls that seem to come out in the shower! I am going to try a new shampoo...anything to help.

Mine started coming out like 2 weeks ago.

It was already falling out pre op due to my ibs and my not being able to absorb hardly any Vitamins and stuff but it stopped for a while and I was happy now back to shedding like a s.o.b!

When I wash my hair a handful comes out when I brush it the brush if full of hair, I am used to my hair falling out so its not like I freaked out just thought oh here we go again boo!

I’ve never taken anything for it.

i am a may sleever too!

5-6 months for me. It started close to the 5 month mark, and didn't stop until about 2 months ago (I'm almost 13 months post-op). It is now growing back in. I was lucky to have a lot of hair to start with, but it was pretty noticeable at the end.

I am almost to 5 mos. My hair was super fine and thin to begin with and now it's falling out a lot for about the past month. I am totally getting a bald patch in the front left of my scalp!

I wash my hair with a Biotin Shampoo and conditioner which doesn't appear to be working. LOL. Going to take an additional Biotin pill and see if I notice a difference over the next month.

I am going to cut my hair tomorrow much shorter and if it keeps falling out I'm thinking a wig may be in my future ((sigh))

I will let u all know when it stops!

I read on someones blog to take a zinc lozenge 50 mg every three days to slow down the hairloss. I also read somewhere that Biosil and B-12 5000 mcg helps with hairloss also. I am pre-op so I don't have first hand knowledge if this all works but I saw this on someones blog and they stated that it is working for them. I'm going to try it, I'll try anything. I have Alopecia Areata and I can't afford to lose ANY hair, I'm already getting treated for the three bald spots I have and they are pretty big....UUGGG!!!!

My hair started falling out at 4 months and is still falling out at almost 6 months. It slows down and just when I think it is over I wake up and have a terrible Hair loss day.

It is scary as the hair is so thin now.

I use placenta with bay rum and bergamot which seems to really help the regrowth but the short new hair seems to fall out again as well.

Nothing we can do but just wait patiently for it to be over I guess!

My NUT told me that it would probably start 3 months post op and continue until 6 months post op. I had long hair and as soon as I found that out, I cut off 9-10 inches to donate. To Pantene (Locks of love is a badly run organization). I get some peace knowing that I've donated healthy hair to them, before I have less of it).

Also, as my sister pointed out, having the shorter hair come out in my brush would be less upsetting than having clumps of long hair coming out.

NUT also suggested biotene. I guess I will start taking it now, hoping it will offset what's coming... Fingers crossed.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
