October 2006 Bandsters!

Recommended Posts

It's weird how each place that does the surgery requires different things for us to do. Mine has asked a lot from me, but in a way I am glad that they are being very thorough. It's just a pain in the ass! :)

My banding is October 9th. I just met with the doctor 9-20 for the first time. Other than that is was a seminar and paperwork. I had an upper GI done and will have pre-op work and nutrition class/pyscologist meeting on the 26th. I keep reading on here about all the people doing a pre-op diet. There was no mention of a special diet prior to surgery. I have two weeks to go and like a few others on here I want that last special dinner out with food not on a post op diet. I am starting to worry that is not the best idea.

I too just met with the surgeon on Friday 9/22/06 for the first time. Previously it was seminars, tests and paperwork. Insurance was a breeze. There was no mention of pre op diet other than lose 10% of body weight (optional). They did however mention that if you are going to have that big last supper, to do it several days before surgery date. I plan on just eating what I like until Thursday. Saturday''s my birthday, but I figure the surgery is my gift to myself and I really don't want or need that BIIIGG Supper! Next Sunday is my prep day and I won't be eating at all. Surgery Monday 10/2. Good luck to all you bandees!!!!

Hi everyone!

My band date is October 2nd - just about a week away. I go for pre-op tomorrow morning. I am very excited and looking forward to life after the band. I know it will have it's drawbacks, but I know the rewards will be greater!

I've done fairly well with eating since I've decided to have this procedure. I haven't eaten more than normal, actually less, which is good. Don't get me wrong though - I will certainly have pizza once more before banding. lol.

We have no special pre-op diet. We're just told to eat light the day before.

Well congratulations to all my October band-buddies! I am looking forward to starting this journey together!

Bizarre. I was told the pre-op diet exists so the liver shrinks and the surgeons are able to get to the stomach easily.

My doctors prescribed a 2 week liquid pre-op diet which is mandatory and I plan to follow it to the "t." They said that if the liver is fatty, they will NOT perform the surgery - so that means liquids (basically Protein shakes and 2 c. of vegetables/day) for 2 weeks.

After hearing what my surgeon prescribes, I'm baffled to hear that some others require NO pre-op diet?!

Regardless, I wish us all the best and an easy recovery!!!

Exactly what I was told. Although we both have Australian doctors, so they might have the same training background...

My surgery centre really stressed that they need us to be on the pre-op diet for the last 2 weeks pre-op. They say it will be the last diet we will ever be on! YAY!

Our pre-op diet is based on medical Meal Replacement products. It has choc or vanilla shakes, chicken Soup, choc mousse, choc bars and choc berry bars. Some variety in the textures, but it all tastes pretty much the same weirdness. To that we can add 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables (NO carrot, potatoes, peas (other than snow peas), Beans (other than mung beans), carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato etc), 1 piece of fruit per day (limited selection, eg. apple, pear, orange, strawberries, pineapple), diet jelly, diet soda, herbal tea, and some basic herbs and Condiments. Absolutely no alcohol or caffeine is allowed.

I'm basically having one of the shakes for breakfast; a salad and a bar for lunch; fruit for afternoon tea; stir-fry, grilled or Soup veggies for dinner; a bar or dessert and diet jelly for supper. Plenty of herbal tea and Water in-between, and just the odd diet soda if I feel like one.

So far the pre-op diet's generally not that bad. I'm on day 5 of the diet today - a bit hungry today, as I had my "special lunch" :hungry: with the girls yesterday, and I guess I'm getting over that. Day 3 was also hard, I got really grumpy and cold. I thought it was because of the heavy gardening work that I was doing, but TOM arrived yesterday, so it was probably that making me grumpy (usually that would have been fixed with chocolate! LOL!). Thank goodness it came now and not when it was due (on surgery day).:clap2:

Different surgeons have different methods of working, or have different view of the relevant research and literature. I think that my surgery centre is very conservative in terms of pre and post op diet requriements, but less conservative in other ways. As long as the outcomes and recovery are good, that's all that should matter.

Good luck to all as we count down the last few days until 1 October! Let the banding begin!:clap2: :clap2:

Hello All!

I'm joining you October banders! Hello! I am excited! My date is October 6th by Dr. Ortiz. The pre-op instrucitons include a 5% weight loss. I have 12 pouunds to lose and two weeks to go. So far, so good. I started yoga which I hope I can keep up. I am also using an elliptical trainer. And I hope to incorporate swimming by November. A friend of mine who lost 100+ pounds on Opti-fast and has kept it off a year and a half later swears both the loss and the maintenance to doing different kinds of exercise.

Are we going to challenge ourselves like the September banders are doing?

Howdy All,

I am scheduled to have the band done with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali on October 4th. I am very nervous. I have to stop drinking beer this week and begin the pre-op diet today.

On a positive note, I bought some new clothes yesterday knowing that it will be the last time I'll ever see that size.

Tonight I am taking my family (me, my mom, and 9 year old daughter) out to the last buffet. Good thing it's all you can eat steak too:clap2:

Hi Georgina,

GREAT job! It's got to be tough to be around a party and still stick to the pre-op diet!

One of the hints my surgeon's office gave me was to keep busy and limit your TV time. They said do crosswords, knit, go for a walk, anything to keep yourself from being bored. I actually purchased a cat-toy knitting kit that I'm going to start when I do my pre-op on 10/9.

And don't forget, come here for support! :)

GOOD LUCK!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
