Night Shift Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

I'm currently on my pre-op liquid diet and my surgery is scheduled on Sept 4th. WOO!

Here is what I foresee as a predicament. I work 12 hour shifts overnight. I live about 35 minutes away from where I work. This is my typical work day. I wake up at 4pm, get ready for work, and grab something to eat. I leave around 5:50 to get to work around 630pm. From there on, I'm quite busy with patients until about 10pm-ish. From then until about 6am I'm pretty sedentary while monitoring my patients. Then, I leave work around 7a to go to the gym for a half hour or so for cardio. I go home and do some weights and then go to bed. Rinse, repeat, etc.

I'm doing the liquid diet, I'm required to do 6-8oz glasses of milk with that Carnation Breakfast NSA stuff and 6-8oz glasses of non calorie liquids like Water, black coffee (ick) or tea. I can also have sugar free whatevers and broth as long as it's less than 15 cal per serving. I

Before work, I'll have a shake. I don't know if I can double my shake and sip on a 16oz one at breakfast since it won't be until after 10 until I have something else. Would that be too big of a serving? I feel like all I do is suck down this stuff. It may just be because I'm not feeling hungry because of my medication (Adderall for ADHD.. also tends to take away my appetite.) I'm on my second day and it's not bad. I'm not having issues with cravings or anything. I just don't know if there is a certain timeframe or order to go by. I don't want to overdo my system with too much at a time.

Are there any night shift sleevers out there that could speak to my concerns? What do y'all do?

I've been working the midnight shift for 9 years now. I'm off three days a week and on my off days I convert back to dayshift. "Crazy, I know". I keep a food journal, it helps to keep up with my input of Protein and calories. Midnight is a new day to begin logging. I don't obsess if I have too many or too few calories in a days time. It's the curse of the shift worker.

When I journal, I use my bedtime as end of day instead of midnight. I'm 3 on 4 off unless there is OT.

I'm probably just thinking too much about it

Well, if you think that's crazy, I work a day job Mon, Tues, & Wed-30 hrs a week. My second job is Thurs, Fri, & Saturday-32 hrs on the night shift. I have yet to figure out when to eat, I can barely figure out when to exercise. I always have a shake on the way to work (both jobs) and I have a shake 4hrs later. That usually gets me close to the end of my shift. If I'm going to work out right after work, I have to eat something, so I usually have another. It's always at least 4 hrs before bedtime, so I'm okay with that. I'm still pre-op and I never get everything in. Good Luck!

LOL, now, that is crazy! Maybe you should keep Protein bars in your purse, for when you have a break.

I work midnights also and I'm going back to work this Friday. I work the same shift 7p to 7a and I'll probably have the same problem. But I think I'll just eat before work but then make my last meal around 11 or 12 then after that just catch up in my liquids the rest of the night if I get hungry.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
