I was nervous about this also-

The day of surgery I took out my navel piercing but that was all. I have other piercings- and those were not taken out- and no one asked or requested I take them out.

One day after surgery my husband replaced my belly ring with just a curved bar- and everything ended up fine.

I had my VSG in Mexico- May 15, 2012 :)

I know you can't wear jewelry during surgery ... anyone know when you can put belly ring back in?

I put mine back in the next day- hubby did it for me.

What happens if you can't get rings off due to gaining weight? Also' date=' what about acrilic fingernails?[/quote']

I had a ring on (toe) and forgot about it- no one said a word- and my acrylic nails were just fine- they just had to be clear- or French tips- but other women had on huge gody nails that were most defiantly not clear- and they still had sugary :)

I think it depends on the dr :)

Since the location of the piercing was purposely avoided' date=' I'm assuming it's in a *special* place and I'd say... take it out. Especially if a nurse is going to be inserting a catheter...[/quote']

Not nessisaruily ;)

Yeah I'll have to take mine out. Fiancé is bummed, be he agrees a healthier me is worth it. Had mine three years, so who knows how fast it might close.

But don't want the catheter getting tangled up either.

And if I decide, I can always have it redone.

My doctor taped my wedding ring - it doesn't just have to do with losing it but also the electrodes they use, the metal can burn you I guess. Took me losing 50 lbs before I could get my ring off.

What happens if you can't get rings off due to gaining weight? Also, what about acrilic fingernails?

i had to take all of min out my tongue ones had to come out no plastic ones because nose and mouth they want clear of anything that can get in the way choke you or they rip.

It’s the same reason they ask about teeth because they could knock them and any fakes can come out.

I had to remove my other one too and this time I didn’t put the plastic one in which I did during my gall bladder op, it didn’t close up and I put it back about a week later.

I had to remove all nail varnish including clear because the monitors they put on your finger and big toe during the op can get wear or interrupted readings from nail varnish.

During my gall bladder op a few years ago I forgot to take off my toe polish they were less than happy and that’s when I got told readings go wrong or are weak.

When I had my surgery, I wore my upper and lower retainers. Hell I just spent 6000 on braces and had them in for 4 years, I wasn't about to have something get chipped or a tooth come out! I just put them in right before I went in, and had them in when I woke up, and gave them to my husband. They never said anything about them, and I was also one of the only people that didn't have a sore throat from the tube down my throat! :-)

I would be very surprised if they didn't take your retainers out after you were asleep. We do it all the time. We remove everything from dentures, retainers, hair accessories, wigs, bras, underwear, and anything we feel could pose a risk during surgery. We just replace them before the patient wakes up, if the patient was anxious about removing them. Everything that we do is for the SAFETY of the patient, and your anesthesia person would have been held liable if a piece of your retainer broke off during intubation and caused you harm. Also, they use a topical anesthetic applicator called an LTA that numbs the mucosa in your throat so there is no sore throat post-op.

I would try my darndest to get the ring off. A little bit of grease and see if it will slip off. If not, the clinic may either have a way to get it off, or decide to tape it.

The reason they want you to have no acrylic fingernails or painted nails is because they need to be able to put a finger thing on that measures the oxygen in your blood. It gives them an idea on your oxygen saturation, or how well you're getting oxygen. I would rather take the acrylics off and know that they could measure this vital sign than have my acrylic nails. That's just my opinion though.

To get my toe ring off I use windex. As goofy as it sounds it really does work. ;-)

I honestly don't know the answer to this one. I have a body piercing and I don't know if I will have to remove it before surgery. I know I can go through airports but I don't know about ORs. Thanks

I went back to my piercer and got Tigon spacers in the nips and that was pre-approved by the surgeon, so all was well.

Umm yes it it. I was thinking it would be very difficult to put it back in. I had emergency gall bladder surgery and I wasn't able to put it back in right away and I had to get repierced afterward. I don't want a burn, especially "down there" so I will put the spacer in and hope for the best,

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
