I have already had my first surgery consult. I still have to go back for another consult, as well as meet with the dietitian, and have my psych eval. My surgeon didn't say anything about a pre-op diet but she did mention that she likes her patients to lose about 5% of their body weight before surgery to make sure they are committed and serious. So that means I need to lose about 10-12 pounds. What should I do to lose it. It seems so strange I have lost weight in the past but for some reason I am blanking on what to do. I know eat right and exercise, but my next surgeon consult is August 23rd. I want to prove I am serious but all of this is enough to make my head swim and start stress eating.

I know most/all of you will understand that is why I love it here.

You could start by trying out Protein shakes to see what you might like. We use Premier Protein ready to drink shakes - you can get a case of 18 them at costco for around $24 (160 cals, 30 g Protein, 3-5 carbs depending on flavor, and 3 g fat) My NUT's at the surgeons office throughout my almost year of pre-op dieting always have us choose protein first - and my pre-op was similar to Atkins induction (less than 20g of carbs a day), lots of chicken, steak, fish and non starchy veggies.

I quit coffee before because I have problems with addiction, and it is a vehicle for spoons of sugar - I also started to really cut back on processed carbs - i.e. anything made with white flour - breads, baked goods, rice, no popcorn - NUT even said that there are no essential carbs - but rather our bodies will convert fat into the best fuel ever. Also watch the fruit - yes it is full of nutrients but also quite a bt of natural sugar. Good stuff but it can slow weight loss.

So lots of protein via shakes - chicken, fish, beef - all lean meats, green salads and veggies and lots of Water - if you have your bariatric Vitamins start those - they make you feel great.

Chimera gave great advice so I'll just share what I've done over the last 4 months as I too am in my preop phase.

I've totally cut out bread, Pasta, rice, potatoes, coffee, sweets (candy/pastries) and all fast/fried food.

Essentially I've gone high Protein, low carb and low calorie.

I haven't done one second of exercise and to date I've lost 44 pounds.

That's great.... I am in my two week pre-op phrase and I lost 10 lbs in four days...my doctor ordered me to do high Protein, low carbs as well... I do meat once a day n shakes, Protein Bars Atkins, sf jello/pudding at other times

A couple more.

I hope I did no over look them. I apologize in advance If I did.

- get plenty of Water.

- log your food.

- set yourself up for success! If you crave sweets pick up some gum or sugar free candy to have on hand.

- keep your healthy foods on hand and stocked up so you don't make poor decisions when your hungry!!

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
