What Will Happen If I Don't Follow The 2 Week Preopp Diet?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this will help anyone else and I am not sure how it will be taken because this seems to be a pretty sensitive topic but.....

For me: I am on day 7 of my liquid pre op and have to go another three weeks..but it has been pretty easy for me and i think it is because of what I tell myself every day over and over...

I constantly tell myself that if I cheat I will die on the table during surgery...I say it over and over and over and it is working because yesterday my Dr told me to have some regular sugar because of my dizziness and I still could only do half a shot of sugar....it took me an hour to drink and I shook through out it...

It may sound extreme but it has made this liquid diet a breeze so far...Our minds are funny things and it can be very overwhelming going through the head hunger..but if we override the head hunger with another fear...that is what effects us with the head hunger guys is fear...so if we make a bigger fear like dying on the table our minds will hold onto that priority....

I work with minds so this was a no brainer for me. Find a bigger fear...for me it was dying and leaving my husband before I had the chance to look amazing...for me that is why I am doing the surgery so it is a great motivator for the pre op.....Find your fear...use it...it helps...

I honestly don't know how they could tell if you have cheated on your pre-op. The purpose of the pre-op is to decrease the size of your liver so it will be smaller so the surgery is easier for the doctor. Unless they took a before and after xray and compared the size of the liver, how would they know? That makes no sence to me!

Well, for the surgeons who care, they know. And, if they are strict about it, then, I would say there is a huge chance they would sew you back up and not do the surgery. You have to think about it this way. Some surgeons may see it as increasing their odds of liability for malpractice or surgical complications if this is something they believe firmly in. If you were supposed to be on the all liquid diet and don't follow it at all, they are going to know. Why take the chance?

I was fortunate that my Dr. didn't have a pre-op diet.

I asked my surgeon at my first appointment if I would have to be on a pre-op diet to shrink my liver, and he said in thousands of surgeries he's only had one patient whose liver was large enough to be an issue for surgery. He had me lay on the table and palpated me - then said "You're fine. You've struggled enough, let's give you the tool (my VSG) you need to get you're weight off. Just don't go nuts till then".

I vote my Dr. for President. He knows most of his patients are professional dieters, and I alone have lost enough weight in my life to equal a small SUV. But without this wonderful tool we've been gifted with, we just couldn't hold our ground. A mechanic can't fix an engine without a wrench, and statistically without surgery the odds of losing most of your body weight and keeping it off for 5 years is ZERO.

I really appreciate the compassion my Dr. shows his patients. We should all have at least as much if not more, for our fellow warriors.

I know there was some disagreement earlier in this thread but may I just say for someone struggling with the liquid diet that I am pretty sure we would all agree that....... liquid diet SUCKS! Not just sucks a little bit but really really really sucks. So if you are all whiny and angry and down and thinking about driving up to a window for a heart attack in a sack....don't think there is anything wrong with you. If there is anyone out there who can say that the liquid diet was a breeze then they most likely wouldn't need surgery.

The good news....it starts getting easier about day 3. Somewhere along day 3 you go into ketosis if you are on a high protein/low carb diet. This acts as a natural appetite suppressant. If I had to do 14 days of day 1 or 2 I would never make it. I am on day 4 and it was doable today. Not fun, not pleasant, but doable. To be honest, however, I have been an over-sensitive, emotional wreck for the past 3 days. If you are reading this on the first few days of your pre-op diet you are probably overly sensitive, tired, shaky, have a headache, and are absolutely starving. The entire world is probably ticking you off and you could come through the computer and slap someone that says "if you can't do the pre-op how are you going to do the post-op?" I caved and had a boiled chicken breast and asparagus on the first night, then a boiled chicken tender on day 2 and 3. Today I did ok. If you do cheat, make it a smart one. Don't cheat with carbs or you will kill the ketosis benefit. Good luck. My Nut. swears it is easier after the sleeve.

Oh yeah--I am down 10 pounds in 4 days.

I start a 3 week shake/bar pre-op tomorrow..part of me wishes I had the dr. That didn't require it, but I'm also looking forward to not gaining 1 more pound. I've done enough damage to myself with food :)....I'm looking forward to dropping a few lbs. Before surgery...I feel like it's going to have me headed in the right direction. (don't judge me when I complain in the next few days or weeks about it,) Ha-ha! Wish me luck!!!

I also read this:

The importance of Protein cannot be overstated. A diet with adequate Protein ensures that you lose fat, especially abdominal fat which can interfere with surgery, and maintain lean muscle mass even while reducing your caloric intake. A balanced and nutritionally rich high protein diet ensures that your body will have everything it needs to recover well from bariatric surgery. The high protein liver shrink diet also helps you acclimate yourself to the higher protein, reduced calorie, reduced carbohydrate diet you will have to follow after surgery.

Good luck--I will stress again that while the first 1-3 days are not fun, you will feel better soon. It gets way easier! Good luck!

Oh yeah--I am down 10 pounds in 4 days.

You are doing so well, I've only lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks. I have cheated with spoons of Peanut Butter, I even had three chicken tacos on 4th of July. I am back to being so strict this week in order to loose 15 pounds before surgery. I am hanging onto hope that it gets easier after surgery.

I've also been SUPER emotional and my patient is running so thin.....my poor husband :)

When is your surgery date? I am in 6 days!!!

I am on day 3 of my 2-week diet and I am quite shocked at how well I am doing. I thought it was gonna be a lot harder but I haven't had anything but Protein Shakes and broth. Everyone is different so don't get discouraged.

My surgery is July 23. I am concerned about getting through the weekend with this diet. It is hard enough preparing food for my toddler once a day. Three meals and 2 Snacks is going to be rough. I know the emotional bit will level out, and I have been told that it gets way easier after the surgery. Keep strong! Good luck on your surgery--I can't wait to hear how you are doing!

I don't see why you can't have them...veggies barely have any calories, no fat, no sugar. But they were very specific to those vegetables only. On my last week, I can't have the veggies. I think it's just for variety because I have to go 3 weeks.

Keep me posted on how you're doing!

My diet is very strict--just the packets of shake mix and Water. I have added boiled chicken breast strips on days when I just couldn't do it, and I am concerned that it is going to be a problem. I am still in week 1 and it gets easier each day. I know I will need to 100% stick to the diet a few days out. I am kinda like--how do people do this and work/take care of family, etc. I guess I am doing it, but I don't know if I could function if it weren't for that few bites of chicken. It is less than an ounce at a time and I am having 3 or less a day, so I think it should be ok, but you never know......

Yea it's a liver shrinking diet and very important for the liver to be small enough so he or she can see to do the surgery. Just think if u can make it thru these 2 weeks it will be over and safer for you. Good luck!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
