June 2012 Sleevers Post Op Check In

Recommended Posts

Sleeved on 6/5 I'm doing great. Been up moving and walking. Down 14 lbs this morning including pre-op diet. All I do all day long is drink liquids but I still have a hard time getting them all in. Sore on my left side but it's bare able. The hardest part of the whole surgery is not being able to pick up my sweet 5 month old baby girl. I don't think she quite understands why mommy isn't holding her and lovin on her. But it will pass and she will have a healthy HOT mommy soon. Good luck everyone.

I have a 7 month old.. I am scheduled to be sleeved on June 27th. I am also worried about not being able to pick her up.. My doctor hasn't mentioned anything. How long did they tell you that you needed to refrain from lifting?

McSleevy,

My wife and I were told not to lift anything over 25 pounds until after the fourth week post-op. My wife made the mistake of lifting our 9 year old (76 pounds)and that part was apparently fine, but setting her down caused a lot of pain.

I'm not a doctor, and won't have the surgery until next Tuesday, but I was say don't lift until after the 4th week. I understand as a parent how hard that will be, but it would be better to be able to lift without injury at 4 weeks than have something bad happen.

But holding shouldn't be any issue!

Eric

I was sleeved last Tuesday, the 5th. It was a rough first few days but I'm feeling better and better each day. I've had no real significant issues with gas and absolutely no issues with reflux or Constipation. It feels like a full-time job, but I'm doing great getting my fluids in. Protein, however, is another story. If that were my job, I'd have been fired by now. :-)

Great to hear you're doing well. What protein source are you using?

My doctor said basically the same thing but my limit is lower. My doc says nothing over 15 pounds for four weeks.

My doc said n othing heavier than a gallon of milk. Not sure how much that weights. I'm so glad everyone seems to be doing so well. I thought I would be one of those, but tomorrow the drain comes out and I finally have some gas x and I'm getting Water and having some issues with the shake. I think the blending of the shake in the magic bullet is putting too many gassy bubbles in my belly. I think I'm going to have to go with stirring as opposed to magic bulleting.

Sleeved 06/05, what a difference a week makes! I would say that I made a bit of progress each day. Probably still not getting in all required fluids, but seem to sip, sip, sip as much as I can. Have no idea if I've lost any weight, I don't have a scale right now. Looking forward to mushies in two weeks! I wish a quick recovery to all who have been sleeved and wish the best to all the rest of June sleevers who are pre-op.

I am 6 days post-op and I'm feeling really good!

Surgery was on June 6th and lasted about an hour and a half. I was in recovery for about two hours. I experienced my worst pain at that point. They quickly rolled me to my room and got the pain meds started in my IV. I was still out of it for several hours. My lips were very chapped and my mouth was very drive. Thank goodness I had Chapstick and the nurses provided the sponge sticks for my mouth.

Later in the day, I was taken to radiology for the leak test. No leaks! I could finally have ice chips and broth. I was able to get up and walk soon after.

I was feeling really good on the morning after surgery, so much so that I felt I could go home. The gas got really bad later in the day, so I decided to stay one more night.

I took pain meds on post op day 2 for the ride home, but I haven't taken any since.

It's been really tough getting all of the liquids in. I can't stand the taste of the Calcium or Multivitamin. The taste of those really change the taste of Water, broth, etc. I've since learned to brush my teeth and tongue after chewing those so that I won't have that weird after taste in my mouth. For a day or two, I was not able to enjoy plain water because of that weird taste.

My doctor's plan allows me to start puréed foods today and I am really looking forward to that change.

OK, Day eight. I'm getting the Water and Protein in better now, though still not up to goal. I also have not had much pain I think I have taken either one or two since I came home.

Today I rode my bicycle 3 miles. I have lost the 10 lbs I gained plus 7 more lbs so far.

All is good, thank the Lord!

Have you tried putting the Liquid Protein in your Water and getting both that way? Seems water and protein are the first big hurdles for most first week sleeves. Walmart carries the liquid Proteins, but I was told that the one that tasted best was New Whey Liquid Protein. It can also be mixed with sugar free Jello which you can make yourself.

Pre-made jello proteins are expensive at 3 to 4 dollars or more. I am told that the other liquid proteins taste less than desirable too. Here is a link to its web site:

There are several flavors.

Thanks for your suggestion. I am extremely picky about artificial sweetener and it took me forever to find a protein source I could tolerate. I still like it postop but my new tummy sure doesn't. On the next couple of days I plan to get the little 2 oz. cups with lids and portion it out so that I a, drinking it slower and throughout the day.

Your Welcome, I will be in your position on the 25th as that is my surgery date. Seems everyone I spoke to had difficulty their first week getting enough Water and Proteins.< /p>

Let me know if it works for you.

Hi fellow June sleevers!

I had my surgery two days ago (6/12). I'm still in the hospital but I'll be going home today. I'm going to take a quick shower before I head home. I'm quite surprised at how good I feel.

I hope all of you are doing well also! Looking forward to going through this journey with you!

I had surgery June 11 Monday. They found a hital hernia so that was repaired also. I have another hernia that will need repaired later on also. I had no idea i had these hernias! I'm still in the hospital since I'm having a hard time getting clear liquids down. Better today I've gotten down 4 oz every hour since 8 am or so. Veg broth seems to work best for me. I hope to go home Friday. Not on alot of pain meds now. Maybe 1 or 2 pills a day cut in half since liquid loratab made me vomit. I've been walking every hour since 6 am.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
