Do Your Taste Buds Ever Go Back To "normal"?

Recommended Posts

Everything tastes so bad! I can't explain the taste, but it is maybe acidic. Even Water tastes weird/bad. banana popsicles are all I can tolerate w/o getting sick. Is this a forever side effect, or an effect while you are healing?

Do your taste buds go back to normal? Yes, and no. There are a few things I just don't like anymore but for the most part, I can eat everything, just in small portions.

Smells and tastes are intense until you start eating normally. Taste buds will definitely be different but more tolerable in time. I've been having the same problem, except I lived off freeze pops the 1st week, and that's what my dr said. Water still tastes gross and sf gives me bad gas and bloating so I flavor my water with packets and mio, low cal diluted g2 Gatorade, bai5, and 1/2 h2o 1/2 apple juice no sugar added from concentrate. Watermelon and baby fruit purée sippee things are my new addiction, a nice change since I hassle a hard time with everything else!

There are things I don't like anymore. Can no longer eat ice cream. But is it worth it YES! I love my body now even the saggy skin. Just go with it.

I can and do eat everything I did before surgery and enjoy every bite. It took about a month for things to fall back into place. Also, you are losing weight so fast that your body produces ketones which give you bad breath and make things taste funny and not the good kind of funny. Once the weight loss slows down everything falls into place.

Nothing changed for me post op. I still get hungry although not as intensely & I still have cravings. I can eat anything & I unfortunately did not lose my sweet tooth. I also have not experienced "dumping" as people were talking about. I wish I did dump. It would help with the sweet tooth!!!

I was so glad to find this!! I thought I was just overreacting. Lol my taste buds have changed ALOT since having surgery. Orange Gatorade and mango madness snapple are the only thing that keep me hydrated. It's nice to know there is hope and I am looking forward to some type of normal. :)

My taste buds have also changed. Anything that used to taste sweet now tastes sickly sweet. But frankly, isn't that a good thing? My sweet tooth is what got me into this mess.

I have an issue with fake sweet. Other foods all taste the same..and good to me now 2 months out. At first, everything was gross. Now Protein Bars and shakes are hard...but due to the fake sweeteners.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
