June 5Th Surgery - Looking For Some Pals!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I am scheduled for surgery on June 5th. I am using Dr. McDaniel in Victoria,TX. I start the pre-op diet of 2 shakes and a high Protein meal with veggies starts on May 22nd.....

I am very excited...and nervous. My biggest worry is the lack of energy after surgery. I have 3 young daughters - and we are very active. I know I will be constantly sipping Water...but I worry how long I will be "down" concerning our beach trips, camping, swimming, etc....

I have tried downloading a bunch of before pics...keep freezing up. I am really hoping to utilize this site for support! Hopefully I will make some new friends with similar experiences and we can help each other through the tough times....

I already have a blog.... www.mightaswellbenow.blogspot.com

Not sure if I would start a new blog on here though....

Well -

Looking forward to meeting y'all!

Hi Shannon!

I'm at the last phase of my pre-op qualifications. My surgeon wants me to talk to a psychologist and see a nutritionist. I've already visited with a cardiologist, and have to do one more test with him. Which all of these things I have scheduled out for Monday and Tuesday. None of them are anticipating there to be a hang up. I then see my surgeon and schedule. I'm expecting a surgery date in mid-June. So, our after surgery journey should be pretty close.

Good luck!!! I'll friend you so we can keep up with each other's progress. Let's do this!

Hi Moregan -

I have been jumping through the hoops for my insurance since September - met with psychologist, nutrition classes, 6 months supervised diet, yadda yadda yadda! It's okay though as I am a teacher and didn't want to miss work...and I will have the summer to get a handle on my new life and eating! Keep me posted about your dates!!

Hi Shannon!

I was 1 week post op yesterday and I do wake up each morning feeling really weak! I made the mistake of making Protein shakes the past couple of days and barely getting any down, then hardly anything else throughout the day.

Today, I simply mixed my 2 scoops of whey Protein Meal Replacement powder with Water and ice and i've gotten it down easily! That's half my protein for the day and half of a Powerade zero! And I feel more energy already! In the future, I plan on waking an hour early and drinking Powerade zero or protein & Water before getting my day started.

That's a good idea! Thanks! I am hoping I will be back to "normal" withing a few weeks - energy wise anyway!! :)

Hi Shannon,

My original surgery date was the 5th, but I had it moved to the next week (on the 12th). I, too, have three young children and they have way too many end of the year events during the first week of June. I thought it would be less stressful for everyone if I waited until the 12th.

I'm looking forward to reading your blog!

Take care. :)

Hi Shannon and welcome,

My insurance case was opened yesterday so I'm just waiting for approval to get my surgery date. I love this forum and spend a great deal of time learning SO much and encouraging others. You'll find some solid support here. I'm glad you've joined us.

@ladylisa - Decatur? I'm probably going to have my surgery there with Dr. Kim next month! I'll keep you posted.

G.

Hi all my surgery is scheduled for June 4th! I was submitted to insurance for approval on the 8th of May and 3 days later it was approved! I have been very blessed throughout this whole process everything has went so smoothly and quickly that I feel as if it was just meant to be. I am beginning to get nervous now though!! Let's help each other through this and rock our June sleeves!!!

Luckily, my insurance didn't really require any pre-qualification things, but my surgeon does. He is very detailed about know as much about each patient as he can. Its why I chose him.

Isn't this website just the best? I'm so happy I discovered it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
